I never thought of using a peeler on celery. If it is especially fibrous, what I do is break back the wide end which sort of reveals the strings, then I can strip the "strings" out of the celery. I think I learned that from Joy of Cooking.

I don’t use a peeler, but when I cut off the top especially of the outermost stalks, I cut most of the way through, then grab the strings between knife and thumb and pull them down. Great for eating, and easier for slicing. Takes negligible time.

I used to years ago, particularly for one of my recipes that called for it to be cut on the bias. Fortunately, somewhere along the way I forgot to do it and until now, completely forgot about that step. I hope it vanishes from the brain as quickly as possible. :-)))

I hate celery but when I cook with it for others I do peel it with my potato peeler.

Only when serving raw, and I use a paring knife like Cloudy Christine. Mainly for the outer 2 layers of stalks. Without the strings, the celery is juicier, and I enjoy it more.

I never peel it. But if you like the flavor of celery, but not the texture, try using lovage for that taste instead.

Once I start destringing I find it hard to stop. My daughter would call it “satisfying.” Perhaps peeling would help control that urge.

My father requires that celery be peeled before he will eat it. I don't peel it for myself, but I usually buy the hearts, so they are tender.

I de-string the celery if it's eaten raw, but not if I'm cooking it one way or another. I don't ever remember actually using a peeler on a stalk.... might be interesting.

A way to get good celery flavor without celery stalks (scratching my head about that) is with celery root. Also known as celeriac. The most delicious ugly vegetable I know. It looks presentable once cleaned up and is very tasty.

If I’m cooking it, no, but if I’m serving it fresh, yes always. I use a potatoe peeler and clean off the outer strings. My Mom always did it too, I thought everyone does. To me, peeling it, brings out a fresher taste. I always rinse it in cold water afterwards and let it sit wet for a bit, it makes it super crunchy. YUM!!!

No, I don't peel it but know some people who do. This made me think of the time a friend called me to ask how to peel mushrooms.

I never peel it - it does not have a peeling that I can tell. It does have strings throughout, and so if you removed all of those, you would have nothing left.

Always have celery in the crisper. Let some go to seed early Fall and will use that in my dressing/stuffing tomorrow...with sage, etc.

I've never heard of peeling celery, I don't think it has an actual 'peel'. I do, occasionally, (VERY occasionally) 'destring' some of it. depending on how it's going to be used, and the size and toughness of the rib.

Jacques Pepin recommended peeling the stringier stalks in one of his recent videos on FB. I guess technically, it's not peeling per se, but rather removing the outer layer with a peeler.

I only do it when the stalks have damaged or discolored areas I want to remove. I will often remove thicker strings too.

And I've grown cutting/leaf celery, which has no thick, stringy stalks. Stems are more like parsley, quite small, with no strings. It's a nice alternative - all the flavor and much easier to grow than regular celery. Does well in containers. I highly recommend it.

No put I do peel the stems of broccoli sometimes. If they don't look too coarse, I leave them alone, as I don't want to pare away any nutrients unless it just looks like it would be too chewy to eat. One of my grandchildren loves only the top 2 inches of spears of asparagus, but doesn't like the rest of the spear, no matter how it was cooked.

I sometimes peel celery if ti's stringy, I peel broccoli stems, and asparagus stems....and peaches. But never grapes...but I guess you have to be of a certain age to get that joke!

Use a peeler for stubborn strings. Love blue cheese -cream cheese spread on celery . Yum . Hummus, too.

I've never peeled celery, nor heard of peeling celery until now. Of course, I hadn't heard of peeling asparagus either, until Mustangs/Kathy sent me a peeler and I didn't even know what the heck it was, LOL. She was definitely the gadget queen, I miss her!

I also do not peel broccoli stems or asparagus but I do peel peaches, I just cannot eat that fuzzy peel.

I do like celery and eat it with hummus, peanut butter or just salt, I always figured the strings were just extra fiber, good for the digestion. (grin)

Call me "out in left field". I've never heard of peeling celery. I do wash it and cut off a small amount at the root end.
