To remove or not to remove? that is the question.

Struggling with whether to remove this fireplace, leave it, or put in something more modern. This is a lakeside home originally built in 1904 with some obvious renovations.

Remove it, it’s horrible.

Are you crazy? Leave it!

I voted to leave it as is, because it seems to suit a lakeside home, especially if that lake is north of the Mason-Dixon line, or in a wooded area.

I think there is no way to answer this without info. IMO carpet at the lake would be my first issue. Next do you live there year round and if so do you need the wood stove for heat? I have no clue as to your style by just mentioning modern. I don’t hate the stone .I need more info.

If you don't have much thatch, then slit seeding should work fine. Of note, if you have an uneven areas, you may as well fix those now. It's easy to level when the grass is dead and the area is raked clear. Even if you don't think the area is too bumpy, I'd have some topsoil on hand just in case. A nice, smooth area really does make the lawn look better in the longrun.

I have a strong prejudice against landscape fabric. Yes, I say "prejudice" because it gives me a visceral reaction though it may be benign in many instances. Just the idea of all that polymer in the soil in my yard... That said- it will limit root depth. If you've had "outrageous success" with it at 6"- then it may be no big issue. I would anticipate that giving roots more room to grow could only enhance the garden, though many report success growing in shallow beds on hard surfaces. At 6" down- it really shouldn't be that much work. If you decide to take it out later- after you've added another 6" depth- now you're talking about some work.

I've had this, and I decided it was a scorch mark from the fabric getting held against the hot dryer side longer than it ordinarily would during the tumbling action. Maybe it gets caught on something and held there just long enough to discolor from the heat? When I've had these, they do fade over time, but don't come out with stain removers.

It takes a lot of sanding to get all the solder off, and you run the risk of cutting the fitting out of round. You do not need to have bare metal, just a layer thin enough to not interfere with a new joint. For a while you could even purchase parts that had a tin coating on them in the solder cup. It had a self life before it corroded enough to require cleaning to make a good joint, but it was much easier to clean up than a plain copper surface. The cost was not really worth it though, and I have not seen any in a few years.

Is there a true fireplace behind the wood burning stove? If so, I might leave the fireplace and get rid of the wood burning stove.

I would reface it. Remove the stone and add something more up to date. The carpet also can go☺️

There are very few scenarios in which I'd completely remove a fireplace, particularly with a lake house. I agree with the others that the carpet is far more of a design issue. I think this fireplace could look nice and cozy and very appropriate for a lake setting with the right decor.
