Your usual Thanksgiving Day weather

Alabama, we generally are in the low 60's upper 50's. Nice weather.

When having Thanksgiving at my parents, we'd rake leaves and let the little ones play in the leaves.

In high school, one year, attending high school football playoffs, it was hot Thanksgiving Day and the next day it snowed. Weird.

In the past it was normal to have a snow or ice storm sometime during this holiday weekend. Right now it is forecast to be in the 50s and sunny but then the snow and sleet that I saw today was not forecast.

We’ve had the gamut over the decades, from skating on the frozen lake (which means it’s been really cold for a good week or more) to walking after the feast with just a sweater.

I am a merchandiser for 3 companies & Wal-Mart is one of the stores I work in. The vendors have to be through by 5 a.m. - meaning some of them will be in at 3 a.m. or be off that day - or wait until after 3 or 4 p.m. Today, the day before Thanksgiving, has been crowded & tomorrow until about 11 will be as crowded. Workers & customers constantly getting in each other's way. Whew!!!! And, I'll have to go "pull up" a couple of more times today! I made the mistake of going to the day after sale & never again! First, you have to park 10 miles from the store. Then you get all the way to the door & find out that everyone's already taken all the shopping carts. Then, you have to inch around shoulder-to-shoulder crowds. When I went, I was buying 3 boys' bikes & a smaller girls' bike. They were in boxes & I liked to not have gotten them in my cart - so good luck finding someone to help you. Then, I had to fight through the crowds again to the cash registers, where I stood in line for an hour. Then, getting them through the parking lot - keep in mind people are constantly backing up & moving - & into the car. Again, never again! Last year, I made the mistake of having to go in for toilet paper or something - one item - & it took forever because of the long lines at the check outs (why don't they ever have all the registers going? is it just me?).

Purple, I've enjoyed reading this thread and wanted to add my $.02 worth. The first thing I noticed is that the stems appear to be flacid.....wilty. That could be caused by over OR under watering.....whichever might cause the roots from being able to access water. In this case, I wonder if the water you're applying is evacuating before soaking the whole soil volume. One thing about these plants (all plants) is that though they need to dry out somewhat between drenchings, the potting soil must be completely saturated on watering day. This is true for all plants, even those cacti that are native to extremely arid regions. Have you ever seen "Medicine Man ", a movie starring that gorgeous specimen of manhood Sean Connery? It takes place in the rainforest of Brazil. There are scenes of my lovely Sean ziplining through the forest canopy, sharing the scenes with huge epiphytic cacti and other plants. Really neat movie. Plus, it stars Sean Connery. I get that it's difficult to understand how those prickly, barrel shaped desert cacti have ANYTHING to do those graceful rainforest plants. Here's what I "think " is a good analogy, but don't laugh at me toooooo hard if it really stinks. Take your dog into consideration for a moment. It's a mammal. So are you and the pesky squirrels in your yard. Big differences amongst those three mammals yet they share essential similarities. Still with me? Now, think of those incredible bottlenose dolphins familiar to anyone living in coastal areas. Superficially, they seem to have so little in common with your dog, but those porpoises are just another type of mammal. They live in a different environment, for sure, but the similarities are much more important than the differences. You just need to try to provide the kind of environment your dolphin needs. :-) Dorie

Morning, Thanks for the replies. To those who are lucky enough getting TC's blooming withot short days or first frost, Congrats. I never had such luck. Nancy, so good to see you? Wondered where you've been hiding...some members just disappear. lol. Remember the variegated TC I found 2-yrs ago? I went to Ted's, 'local green house,' last Feb, to see if they had more, thinking about you all the time. No such luck. The owner said they had no TC's, but an employee brought me out back where two shelves filled with TC were sitting..6" pots, 2.00 ea, no variegated. What a disappointment! Nancy, what and where is your house plant ID? lol. Where do I look? Is it a photo site? Anyway, happy you're back, and hope you're here to stay. Hey Mike..you know I'm always glad to see you, too. :) So, your TC's are blooming indoors? Any light hitting them at night? Sure, love to see your photos..Please post. Mike, ants like ALL plants. Think they lay eggs in soil..This year, like last, I placed ant baits on tables plants summered outdoors sit. And vinger-ized, 'my word,' ALL plants..again, like last year. Know what? Vineger-ized plants didn't have many plants in 2013. Hey Will...So your TC's never seen the outside? Your TC is beautiful. So large and filled with deep green foliage. Beautiful!!! CB. You're one of the lucky TC gardener's too. I don't understand why my TC's won't bloom when kept inside. I pray they bloom by the holidays. Rhizo...Another lucky gardener. Oyster Stuffing 1 cup (1/2 pound) butter 1 cup chopped onion 1 cup chopped celery 7 cups day-old bread cubes 2.5 teaspoons salt 1/2 teaspoon black pepper 1/4 teaspoon ground mace 1 pint shucked oysters, drained, liquid reserved, and chopped about 1 cup milk Melt the butter in a skillet and saute onions and celery until soft. In a bowl combine all remaining ingredients except the milk and oyster liquid. Mix well. Pour in the oyster liquid, then slowly add enough milk to moisten. Do no make too wet. Loosely stuff into the turkey cavity. If there is extra, bake separately in a buttered pan during last hour of roasting the turkey. Roast Duck 1 duck (or boiler-fryer chicken) 3-3.5 pounds 3 cloves garlic 2 bay leaves 3 tablespoons butter, melted 3/4 teaspoons salt 1/2 teaspoon pepper 1/4 teaspoon thyme 1/4 teaspoon majoram 1/4 teaspoon oregano leaves 1/4 teaspoon ground sage 1/4 teaspoon dry basil Remove giblets and reserve for other uses. Rinse bird and pat dry. Split 1 clove of garlic and rub skin of bird with cut sides of garlic. Place garlic cloves (including the cut one) and bay leaves inside the bird cavity. In a small bowl, stir together butter, salt, pepper, thyme, sage, majoram, oregano, and basil, Put about 1 tablespoon of the mixture in the cavity of the bird. Tie legs together. Generously brush bird with remaining butter mixture. Place bird, breast side down, on a rack in a shallow baking pan. Bake, uncovere, in a 425 degree oven for 45 minutes. Turn bird over and continue baking, basting occasionally with any remaining butter or pan drippings, for 40-45 minutes more or until meat is no longer pink when slashed. Makes about 4 servings

We don't have a "usual". Some years there's a foot of snow on the ground, others it's sunny and shirt sleeve weather. This year the forecast is for rain and temps in the 40's.

We are also in the low to mid 60s by day and in the mid forties in the middle the night.

Thanksgiving Day this year will be in those temps and sunny according to the forecast.

Where we wear a jacket and flip flops in the same outfit and neither is wrong.

I did the same through the first week of November this year. I am still seeing younger people wearing shorts.

Anywhere from shirt-sleeve weather to several inches of snow. This year,

it's supposed to be in the 50's and no rain or snow. But, today it is in the 30s

and blowing snow turning to rain. We are in the "if you don't like the

weather, wait a minute and we'll get you something different" area.

The weather for the turkey is always very hot. For the humans it is usually in the 40s or 50s here on turkey day.

Usual T'Day weather here is chilly, grey and wet...........November tends to be our rainiest month of the year. Forecast is for not much, if any, rain this year, but chilly and grey it will be!

But it can be pretty blustery as well as that rain is usually triggered by Pacific storms moving on land. There have been any number of Thanksgiving dinners I can recall that have been disrupted by power outages.

Chicagoland can be nice, but is more likely grey skies, and sometimes snow -- just a few flakes, like today, or an unpredicted blizzard. I remember guests deciding to stay overnight in the fifties rather than creep and crawl thirty miles to their homes.
