7' Steel Door Between Garage and House

All of our doors are 7' (my husband is a tall guy and our ceilings are tall too) Where can I find a 7' (84") tall steel door between my garage and house? Home Depot does not sell them. They sell 80". thanks!

I have three Fatezzi faux wood garage doors installed at my house. I'm glad I did not go with wooden doors. My brother's wooden door had multiple issues with the wood wrapping after a year of ownership. He had a wood cladded over a steel insulated door. It's not a solid wood door. Perhaps it's not as good as a solid wooden door. Maybe a solid wood door would performed better. I don't know. One thing for sure is that the Fatezzi faux wooden garage doors genuinely look like real wood. People who have seen my doors did not know they are not made from natural wood until I told them about the Fatezzi synthetic material. My doors have gone through two winters (including the last two recent heavy snow storms that went through the North East) and two summers to date and they performed as advertised. No issues whatsoever. They are more expensive than the typical steel insulated garage doors but the look of wood adds value, character and curb appeal to my house. Pricing is comparable to solid wood doors and wood panel/cladded doors. The big advantage over natural wood is the low maintenance aspect of the Fatezzi door. Hope it helps.

if you need 9' - 10' clearance how does the hinged false header help....are you going to have someone push it up and down when needed?..I guess it would work if they accepted it...home associations are usually strict and seam iron clad..are you sure they will even let you add a 3rd garage...

The door jam is either fabricated for the present door or it came prehung as a unit. It is highly unlikely that a new steel door will line up with the existing hinges on the present door jam and most often steel doors come prehung on a metal frame. You can purchase wood doors and mortice them to match existing hinges on the wood frame. You can't do that with a metal door. Also, the metal door will more than likely be thicker than the pine door so it probably won't fit the frame regardless.

Your house only has to meet the code requirements in place when it was built unless you are substantially changing it. So if you are replacing it "in kind" you should match it exactly, but if you change it in any way you should neet the current building code. Of course, it would be wise to use the current code as your guide in any event. I don't have a copy of the 2006 residential code for New Jersey but I know it is based on the International Residential Code which I do have and the requirement is now a 1 3/8" (min.) solid core wood door with no rated frame, UL hardware, or closer required. (Such a door, if tested in a rated frame and wall, is assumed by the building code to achieve a 20-minute fire rating.) Alternatively, the code also allows a solid or honeycomb core steel door, or any door that has been tested with a 20-minute fire rating. So, get a solid core flush door with a suitable veneer for stain or paint or get a wood paneled door assembly with a 20-minute rating. Rated wood paneled doors are expensive and come with a rated frame. In some states the NFPA 101 Life Safety Code is in effect (sometimes enforced by fire departments) and it usually requires a 1-hour door. This requirement seems pointless since the door is not required to be in a 1-hour rated wall.

@Lindsey_CA I have. Myself and my contractor have had a hard time finding one. Thought we had one and they sent an 80" :-(

@Stax Wrong kind of door. The door I am looking for is to be the door between my garage and house. The door you linked from Home Depot looks like something for a school gym.

@roccouple Thanks - we have been looking at those (our other house-to-garage door is Masonite) With COVID it is tough to get doors in a timely manner

Go to a real lumberyard or window and door store, get out of the box stores.

Who shops for anything from a box store? No wonder you’re finding nothing. You’ll never find anything worth buying there. It’s all the cheapest most awful everything. Even the lumber is terrible.

Are you sure you need a steel door? What is the applicable building code or where is the project located? You might be able to use a solid core wood door or a door panel rated for 20 minutes in a non-rated frame or a paneled door with a similar rating.

We used trustile in our last house and they had a matching fire rated door (for the garage) that looked identical to the rest of our interior doors.

same thing with this house but a different brand.

if you can get a 7’ non standard door in the brand you are using, why wouldn’t they have a fire rated door as well?

@ILoveRed - I don't know - they sent 80" and said it would take six weeks to get a different size. I will take a look at trustile.

Oh btw, our doors were 7’ in the trustile as well. These doors aren’t cheap but if you can get it to match the rest of your doors, it might be worth it.

what style and brand is your door? Still think you should make sure they don’t make a 7’ fire rated door In your own brand.

my interior doors are 7' three panel shakers. solid wood. They are masonite. I will not be able to find that style of door as a garage-to-house door because of the way the panels are done, but I am looking for a three panel 7' door that is as close as I can get

Yes, we have decided to order a door (probably TruStile) and just finish up the house with the 80" door. When the 84" door comes in next year we will swap them out (opening was originally for an 84" door, closed it in to support an 80" door, so not too difficult) Thank you to those willing to discuss and offer comments on door companies you have used.
