First I would get a counter depth fridge for sure , change the backspalsh , make sure all the lighting is LED 4000k then see what else needs cahnging . In fact I would remove the 4” piece of counter too whaen you do the new backspalsh That is the worst place for wine storage so IMO take that away.Tiny kitchens need no clutter so all the stuff off the fridge for sure both the top and the door. Tidy up the pantry then add a set of frosted glass doors there in the same color wood as the cabinets .That will make the space feel bigger along with the counter depth fridge.What is the black cabinet and stool for ?

Instead, I’d suggest new backsplash, paint walls white, add black hardware including on bi-fold, a vinyl runner would be cute/practical/break up the floor, and new lighting

Okay so neither of you would recommend painting the cabinets to something like this?

I think the white cabinets would look great but are you going to spend $$$ to have them professionally done? I had the same cabinets a few years ago and painted them white. I went with my painter who was very good but still after 6 months they had small cracks in the doors.

It is best with a factory finish. I understand budget wise you might want to paint them yourself or

hire a painter as I did but how long do you want them to kook great. Just something to think about.

I was just going to paint them myself. The idea would be to sell in 1-2 years so wanted to give it a fresh look but wasn't sure if I could get away with it and what would look best without having to totally replace everything.

I agree with the others - the cabinets are not the problem here. Change the backsplash and paint, change the bifold pantry doors, change the cabinet hardware to black, remove the wine storage and put open shelves in that corner so that the upper molding makes sense. Much cheaper solutions that will give you a much better result than painting the cabinets.

The cabinets are one of the positives. The lack of lighting, and the dark counters and floors are the much bigger issues. Those should be addressed before taking on a task that will take you weeks and weeks of work. And will still end with an underlit and dark kitchen.

Okay all of your comments are greatly appreciated! I have lighting underneath the cabinets they just aren't on in this picture. The cabinets are an almost yellow colour which is what I'm struggling with. I will start with changing the backsplash and the paint and will repost when I have that done. Any suggestions on paint colours and backsplash? Also, the bifold door - Do I paint that the wall colour to blend in? Or totally replace it? Suggestions/Pictures what to replace it with? I'm in Canada so we dont have as many options for things as you do in the US.

I like the countertops with the cabinets and floor. You can do a new backsplash to totally change the look. What is sticking out like a sore thumb to me is the white door against the wood and black -- even if you keep the bifold, paint it some other color or better yet, replace it with a wood door. The harsh white is very jarring.

I think your cabinets are very on trend. If they look yellow, it can probably be corrected with lighting. Depending on the finish, you might want to give them a good rub down with a wood conditioner, maybe something like Howard’s Feed-n-Wax to enrich the grain. (Try it on the inside of a door first.)

I like your countertops, but they are awfully dark. Probably not worth replacement if you’re going to sell soon, and perhaps not in budget. I’m not a fan, generally, of black hardware, but if you cannot swap out your countertops, black might really pop on those cabinets. I strongly agree you need a backsplash with some pizzazz, and to remove that dated 4” splash. I love the tile Maureen posted. If you can get rid of it, that odd cabinet under the wine rack seems to clog up the space. I actually don’t mind the wine rack, unless you’re putting really fine vintages in it.

I think you have a lovely little kitchen and it just needs a bit of polish. I would never paint those cabinets. Good luck!

If you are going to leave the bifold door white, I would paint the walls white as well as Maureen suggested, so that it blends in. Otherwise Patricia's suggestion of wood/glass doors to match the cabinets would be nice. As you can see from Maureen's inspiration photos, a black and white scheme plays well with the yellowish color of your cabinets, so lean into that.

When you change the backsplash, don't turn the corner by the range, just leave that side wall painted.
