It isn't. Looking at a schematic for a 36" RPB (6 burner), the gas valve and thermostat are separate. On my 12-year-old RNB, the thermostat is in the control panel (input is the oven temperature knob) and it has a cable to the thermocouple (temperature sensor) in the oven. The "dual auto valve" (oven burner plus broiler) is under the range, I believe. I believe how it works is that when you turn the oven knob, power is sent to gas valve (one of two connections for oven, broiler, depending on knob position). The gas valve turns on the igniter and waits to sense that it's hot to turn on the gas and start the flame. When the thermostat senses (from the thermocouple) that the temperature setpoint has been reached, power cuts off to the gas valve. When the temperature falls far enough, the thermostat turns the power back on and the gas valve re-lights the flame. If it's any consolation, our thermostat quit working on Xmas eve one year when we were hosting the extended family. Good luck.

I want to find out what my rights are as a consumer. That's lawyer territory and it will depend a lot on where you bought the appliance and who you bought it from. In some states (e.g. California) there are laws that might apply and that say something about for how long a manufacturer needs to make spare parts available. It doesn't necessarily say anything about what they can charge for it though, and it is not clear whether these parts need to be made available before they have failed, yet. In fact, it isn't even clear to me whether the parts need to be made available to consumers or just the service companies. So, you might not be able to buy parts in anticipation of of them failing in the future. Also, I am not clear on what the penalties are for not making these parts available. But unless you happen to live in a jurisdiction where laws like this apply, you don't have very many other rights. The best you could do is look at the Magnuson Moss Warranty Act. It might give you rights that would help, but off the top of my head, I can't think of any that apply to your specific situation. You might have additional rights because of your (extended) warranty, but the terms of that contract would spell out what happens if the appliance is unrepairable (e.g. because of parts availability). You might just be entitled to a pro-rated refund for the appliance, and that could be less money than you'd think. Also, this would only apply for the duration of the warranty. If you bought with credit card, you might have gotten additional warranty coverage. But again, that would typically be no more than one additional year, and they can't help you with parts that go out of stock, either. A good lawyer might be able to think of some other angle. But if there is anything you can do, you'd have to do it quickly. And if the legal entity that sold these appliances in the US has ceased existing without a new successor, you might be out of luck anyway. I think your best bet would be a buy-back offer for a partial refund (e.g. 50% of the cost you paid). And even that might be very hard to negotiate. The US simply doesn't have much in the way of consumer protection laws.

I’ve got a La Cornue hanging out in my barn in Maine waiting to be installed. One of the reasons I bought it is that any good plumber or stove repair person can work on it if there is a problem (I deliberately picked a low fi range as I’m in a rural area), and that parts are easy to get online. They also have regional sales people that are highly responsive. I spent about 6 months researching potential problems and repairs before pulling the trigger. If it’s been tested and shown to be in good working order, I’d feel pretty safe making that purchase.
