Hang pictures without damaging the walls ?

I and my wife love hanging picture in the house, like canvas pictures, but we don't use nails because we don't want to make any holes in the walls. We have tried using the double side tape, or sticky wall hook but it seemed not work. The tape was weak that could not hang the pictures, the sticky hook damaged the wall coating so much and both of them left glue marks when removing. Can you give us some recommendations. Thank you!

Update: My neighbor recommended me to use a kind of double side tape called nano tape and I 've tried it since wednesday. The result surprises me so much. The tape is very strong when hanging photos but I can remove it quite easily without any damages. Although the price is a little bit expensive, It can be reused many time (I'm testing the number of reusing time and I will review later) so maybe it is more economical. Nail holes are easy to fix. Fill the hole and paint over it.

Easy. 3M removable hooks. They come in a ton of varieties and are weight-rated. So you can hang almost anything on the walls then remove the hook with no damage. I use these a lot at Christmas time to hang decorations without having to put holes in the walls. 3M also has removable hooks for outdoors, commonly used for Christmas wreaths on doors and Christmas lights. They are a miracle!

I guess with as wide a space as you've got, that center support might be useful. Could you build a wall that comes out from the back? But if it's just two doors that meet, and one of them has a bolt that goes down to keep the door from wobbling (sort of like this, only maybe it's more spring-loaded?) http://doorhardwareusa.com/admin/uploads/surface_bolt.jpg then you can just leave that bolt off. If it bothers you that the two doors still shift a little without the bolt, you can use a latch that makes them snug to each other a bit more firmly. Also, FYI--the "ball catch" can go on the TOP of the door, anchoring into the door frame instead of the floor. I would say that if you think that closet is needed, why wouldn't some future buyer? And I'd also say that *you* are unlikely to want to eliminate it. And I'd further say that this small hole in the floor might patch more easily than you think. As for matching--you could do a plain flat door (drywall-type surface) and paint it to match the wall, instead of pretending that it's a real door. Then it's just sort of "a part of the wall that opens." You can even hang a picture on it! I still say--get a carpenter or small-jobs construction person to come in and discuss options with you. Gracie's idea is very good! The 3M Command hooks, asked about by the OP, are not recommended for wallpaper, 3M says. Only other thing I can think of is a picture rail, but you need to install that with nails, too. Did you have wallpaper left over? I think that if you really love the paper and know you want to live with it for a while, it'd be good to get an extra roll for matching (like maybe if someone in the household gets hair dye on it, or spills medicine that stains, or maybe someone gets dizzy, goes to grab a towel bar and the towel bar pulls off the wall, etc..) Having extra will ease your mind about putting a nail in the wall!

Hey Sdello, thanks for weighting in and the advise. The wallpaper isn't in great shape in spots which is kind of the reason I started going down this road. It is starting to peel in some of the seams and corners so it might not be too bad to remove. I think peeling it off might be helpful, but I know that the drywall was nailed up and not screwed. In light of that, do you think it would still be advantageous to expose the nails and try and work them out? Thanks again for your thoughts and help. I would have no problem with the base you want to use being paired with the door casings that you have. The bevel on the base is complimentary to the door casings. Remember: some homes have a certain character. Leaving a bit of that character in place while updating other areas is perfectly fine. The Europeans do it all the time. Apartments in Paris, London, Berlin, Rome, Milan, etc all have these types of concerns. They have updated elements (like kitchens and flooring) while other parts are simply left alone (like doors and casings). Go ahead and do what you are planning on doing. If it looks good to you, then you know you are fine. If you feel an eternal itch to change the door casings (like after a year or two) then go ahead and change them out. You have to deal with the consequences regardless. I would push through your planned renovations and ignore what you cannot fix/change. I can guarantee that in 6 months you won't even remember you questioned the look.

I use straight pins. I have quilting ones and when you move one you can't see the hole!

I also recommend the 3M hooks. (They're in the "Command Strip" line of products.)

For valuable/heavy/fragile items I'm still putting a hole in my wall, though!

Thank you for the 3M hooks recommendation, I will try and give some review about it :D. I've tried some other kind of sticky hooks but it's not good. Hope this 3M works well :D. I also heard about a kind of tape called nano tape, does anyone used it? Can you give me some feedbacks about it? Thanks

I’ve had good luck with the two sided Velcro 3M command strips for hanging frames. There are directions that you have to follow, like cleaning surfaces, applying pressure for a certain time, removing the frame for an hour before hanging to allow it to cure etc. 3M even has something that will hold up a canvas.

Or install a picture rail. I have an old house with traditional picture rail molding, but you can get modern minimalist rails that mount to ceilings or walls. The rail would be permanently installed but then you could add, remove, or rearrange pictures around to your hearts content without any additional holes in your walls. The downside is that you can see the picture wire. I use fishing line, but it's still visible.

Several years ago; I can’t remember who told me, but if you know the paint color, remove the light switch cover from the first switch you come to when you enter a room and write the color details on the reverse side and put it back. That way you’ll always have a record of your paint. Then you can hang the paintings whichever way you like and patch the holes when you want. The Command strips in my experience, vary with their retaining strength on textured walls and can let go after a couple of years when you least expect it leaving a potential mess on the floor. My personal preferences are the screw in drywall picture hanging hooks. Paired for the appropriate weights, including shelving, they don’t come out and I’m not concerned with valuable artworks plummeting to the floor in the middle of the day.

The nail is thin & very tough. Leaves a small hole. A bit of Drydex & a smidge of paint & all is good again.
