Best way to protect new wall to wall carpeting during open houses?

I just had new wall to wall, tan colored polyester carpeting installed in my mom's house in her dining room, livingroom and on her staircase. We are going to be doing open houses shortly and I was wondering about the best way to protect them but still make a nice presentation at the same time. Any ideas?

I am assuming it's open houses for selling the home and wanting to preserve the carpet from prospective buyers walking through it. She didn't say anything about parties. If I am correct, you can also talk to your real estate person about what they have available to protect the carpet. Surely they have paper runners available.

Buy a box of disposable shoe covers and put them in a pretty basket at the door. You may need to include a bench or chair too as well as a garbage can for used ones on the way out.

Agree that paper booties are the best protection....but open house? How many are you expecting? Anything fewer than 40, don't stress. Those booties are for houses that are open to hundreds.
And frankly when I am invited as a guest to someone's home for a party and greeted at the door with a basket of shoe coverings.....I turn around and leave.
If your house is so fragile that it can't stand the wear and tear of a party....then have your partys at a hired venue.

The whole growing under glass was a major trend in the mid/late 1800's, both in the northeast US and in northern Europe. For peaches the extra heat afforded in the summer under glass helped ripening times, same for grapes and citrus. It was a rich persons hobby apparently, along with race horses etc. As far as (re)-learning old lessons from these books, that one cuts both ways. There is a ton of knowledge that got lost over the years so there is a lot we can (re)-learn from them, but on the other hand they had some significant misconceptions, for example they talk on and on about this supposed disease called "peach yellows" which is now believed to just be nutritional. Re: the late summer pruning I also believe the old authors have that one right. I should pull out a few of these old books and re-read them, I was reading many of them 4-5 years ago but have not done too much lately. Check out Wright's Fruit Grower's Guide, thats one of my favorites. Fruitnut, you would enjoy reading the long sections on growing fruit under glass. I also learned a lot from their pruning descriptions, it is surprising how advanced their pruning methods were 150 years ago. Scott

You'll think this is weird, but it worked for us. I took quilt batting that I already had, but blankets would work too, 2 large moving boxes cut open and made a "sandwich out of them. Put them against the wall and secured them with bungee cords on the stairwell. Worked perfectly. As to other walls I just asked everyone to be extra careful and maybe promise them lots of their favorite food and beverages when all is said and done.

OMG...this is VERY difficult. I don't know how you (and all the others) did it. I've realized I'm covering way too much surface and need to go much, much smaller. Of course, after I applied PA7 to another large space that I get to remove today. Yaay. So far, The Green Monster is winning this war. I can't seem to rinse off the brick well enough to remove all the PA7 and the paint residue. How did you rinse off the brick well enough and not create a huge puddle on the floor? Did you find any specific brushes/tools to be most beneficial? I've noticed the grout is soft and I have to not use any metal/wire brushes. Nylon only. I'd love any suggestions/advice as to techniques that worked for you. I'm going thru nylon brushes like M&Ms. Just how long did this take you from start to finish? Five years? Eight? I don't know if I can do this...it feels daunting. I'm not sure PeelAway7 is the right product for this. Take a look at the pics below. Fireplace with first coat of PA7: After...still needs more scrubbing and rinsing (w/out flash). This is after 3hrs of scrubbing and 2 coats (two 24hr segments) of PA7. Same w/flash: Got ambitious before I knew what I was in for. I get to remove this section today.

samba and geoffrey- It's not accurate to say an occasional exposure to asbestos is not of concern, or that the only cases of asbestos-related diseases were the result of longterm, industrial exposure. The epideiological data show many cases of disease from much lesser exposures, and there are even cases where asbestos-specific cancer developed with no known exposure. There is also a likely genetic component. Since there is no known safe exposure level, taking precautions is prudent. Wearing a dust mask gives a false sense of security as asbestos particles are so small they readily pass through standard filters. To properly protect your lungs, you need a respirator fitted with canisters that are specifically designated for asbestos.

That's what I thought. I don't know why some people have to post such snarky responses when people come here asking for help. Have you asked your real estate company if they have suggestions or resources? I think paper walkways help keep people where you want them and out of areas you don't want them to walk. I don't think anyone would think it detracts from the beauty of your home, but will appreciate you keeping the new carpet pristine.

Aah...that's a whole "nother thing"...I am remembering a party that was intended to pay back 2 years worth of obligations and over a hundred were invited and the patios and lake side area were used, but if you wanted to go inside you were greeted with a basket of shoe protectors.

I think there is absolutely nothing wrong with the paper booties, or even asking people to remove their shoes. We have been house hunting and I ALWAYS ask the agent if they’d like us to remove our shoes. I would like to be respectful of the homes I’m entering......

Buy a few rolls of carpet protection film. Builders use this all the time. Put it down in the paths one would probably walk to view the house e.g. from the door of the bedroom to the bath to closets, etc.

Be careful with the sticky backed carpet protection strips, as when removed, they can tug at carpet fibers.

Can you request that people take their shoes off? Nobody where I live would wear shoes indoors, it's just customary to remove them. It feels icky to even think about wearing shoes on carpet especially.

At this time of year here in Michigan people would, hopefully take off their boots. But not a bad idea to have booties on hand.
