Interior Stair Railing Replacement

Hi! I'm DYING to replace my stair railing. I don't know the first thing about how to go about this. In fact I don't even know if you call this a banister, or balustrade etc so feel free to let me know lol I am looking for something more modern, clean lines. I've attached some inspo photos.

I want it to be done nicely but definitely on a budget.. I don't even know what this will cost me. Should I attempt to DIY, call a contractor - what kind of contractor would it be? Anything you can tell me about how to do this, where to get supplies, or who to call...would be helpful. FYI the carpet is staying so it is just the white and brown wood I want to do something with.

You need to decorate your way out of this one please. Stairs and hand railing are in the advanced carpentry class; only the very advanced and equipped DIyers should attempt such a project.

@Joseph Corlett, LLC maybe DIY was the wrong term... but could I buy the supplies and maybe get a handyman and my painter to do it? Or what kind of contractor am I looking for?

The post I mentioned would not be at the bottom tread so the design of a continuous handrail would have to bypass the post to get to a newel at the bottom tread and there would need to be a guard at the new opening whether it be solid, balusters, etc. At first glance it seems a potentially messy solution. Perhaps the handrail could be at the other side and the guard could terminate at the post. The bottom tread should have had returns at each side. Its looks like a abasement stair in the entryway.

I want to repaint an interior metal stair rail. it is old so probably all oil based. Painters are telling me that I need a oil based primer to cover it. Oil based paints & primers are no longer available. What product should I use? There is no rust.

I think I'd put a railing on top of the low brick walls on either side. Make it part of the architecture, vs. the stuck-on look it has now.

"Is this something that is easily replaced from a big box?" Absolutely not. "Or because of the top curve (which I think most staircases would have) would it have to be something custom made?" It depends on the material, however, stair building is second only to boat building in the carpenter universe. The person you want to do this is very busy right now. In fact, when you get his proposal, you'll forget fooling with this rail I'm betting.

Know your area's building codes before you start. What you like and what is to code for your area may not line up. A licensed contractor should know if you can't find any information on your city's website.
