Exterior stair railing or handrail

The railing on the left has rusted through. I need to either repair/replace it as is or remove it and add a railing or handrail on top of the brick half wall. Leaning toward the second option so it's not such a tight fit opening the screen door. For symmetry I'd plan to add the same railing/handrail to the half wall on the right too. Does anyone have any photos of a similar condition with railings/handrail on top of a stair half wall? I searched online but didn't have much luck. Thanks!

I think I'd put a railing on top of the low brick walls on either side. Make it part of the architecture, vs. the stuck-on look it has now.

Definitely remove the railing that is there now. If you have to have a railing, then put it on top of the bricks, but do it on both sides.

Leave it be. Stair work is some of the most expensive zero payback work that you can have done. And what you had was so much better than the overwrought 1997 fakery shown.

Painting will not look right and it will not hold up. There are firms that will come in and spray (refinish) your treads and bannister because that is what I did. Then you can paint the spindles. My staircase was similar all one color from 1970s.

do i paint the underside of stair railing black as well as the rail?

Yes, of course you do. Take a few minutes to construct a cardboard or plastic shield that can be slid around each of your spindles to keep the paint from getting on them and then carefully paint the underside of the banister.
