Which comes first - painting cabinets or installing/finishing floors?

We are about to kick off a kitchen remodel that includes painting existing cabinetry, replacing countertops, new backsplash, and also replacing tile floor with hardwood which will be finished on site.

We have different opinions on what comes first from the contractor, painter and flooring company. So what order should the work be completed?

1. Install floor with sanding / stain / 2 coats of finish, paint cabinets, then do final coat on floor

2. Paint cabinets, then install floor and complete the sanding / finish

Both options assume any toe kick / trim molding on the bottom of cabinets would be installed last.

Whats the best practice here? Any advice or suggestions are greatly appreciated.

Most of the painting will be done off site in a spray booth and if that is not being done then get a different cabinet refinisher . So what I would do is get the boxes painted on site then do the floors while the doors and drawer fronts are being done off site then all you need is to hang the doors and the space is done. Are the floors matching what you have in the other spaces ? If the others are wood then IMO they all need to match too.

Thank you @Patricia Colwell Consulting. The entire first floor flooring is being ripped out (tile and carpet) and replaced with site finished hardwood. They will all match.

Yes, the painter is taking all doors off and spraying offsite.

I like your suggestion to paint the boxes on site then do the floors after.

Ohhhh Kellyeng! I'm so sorry. You know, your build is taking as long as mine. Hummm, does your GC have brown hair and seem to vanish for a week at a time??? I wondered about the cabinets when they were installed but GC said no they go in first. I guess this all just comes down to how each GC was trained. Or, tries to save $$$ perhaps? But in that note, GC's reasoning was he didn't want the scaffolding, the wood stove installers or any other of the subs to damage the floor. I do worry about the granite not getting in and our tile guy wanting to leave for 2 months. I know he's waiting, waiting, waiting....

You meant refinishing floors, not walls, right? Do the floors first, because of the dust. Later, stray drops of paint that fall outside the drop cloths should be easy to remove from the refinished floor. That's the way it worked on our floors, and I hope it proves true for you too.

All the comments are excellent. If you prime and paint the walls first, how do you know where the studs are to hang the cabinets? I guess we could use a stud finder, but I (home owner) thought it would be easier to hang the cabinets before priming and painting. We plan to use a professional painter and will also seek his advice. I want to keep the project moving so I thought we could hang the upper cabinets while the drywall is being mudded and finished in other rooms. Any views?

Dishwasher and fridge are installed after flooring. My assessment here in CA among remodelers is that cabinet people want the floors in first and floor people want the cabinets in first. I think the main reason each wants to be last is they don't want to deal with damage caused by one of the other trades. Builders seem to put cabinets in first on slab foundations (shimmed to floor height). On our slab foundation we are putting cabinets in first (shimmed to floor height), then flooring, then appliances.
