I absolutely 1000% go by what I love. That way it will work in a huge variety of interiors for years to come. “Art to match the rug” is very HomeGoods to me - looks great in photos or in a staged home but you feel nothing when you look at it...

That being said I have plenty of pieces that I bought because they were okay and the empty walls were bugging me. Working on eventually replacing then with things I love.

Art is my “thing”. I have never bought art to match my home. I love art fairs and have purchased the majority of my art from there. We live a couple hours away from the Ann Arbor art fair which I believe is the largest art fair in the country. I enjoy going to Parade of homes but the generic, coordinating art leaves me cold.

I have never bought art to match my furniture and rugs and I never will. While I tend to buy original art I do have several antique bird prints.I am dtawn to landscapes but the last few pieces have been contemporary watercolors. My late husband and I started collecting several years ago and I have continued to buy the art that I like. I probably have 150 pieces of some very good art. Some were bought on a whim but all are hung and arranged with thought and planning.

I agree with everyone above. For me, art is art, something meaningful, and not part of the furnishings, not meant to co-ordinate with the rug or sofa or (shudder) throw pillows, or to be a "pop of color". Homes where this is done -- by professionals and regular homeowners -- to me always looks soulless. I suppose because what they have gone in search of is stuff to hang over the fireplace or stuff to fill up a wall, rather than art.

I would sooner change the furnishings, esp wall color, to highlight the art, rather than making the art blend in with the furnishings.

The lack of walls in open plan houses is another subject altogether!

I'm glad all of you agree with me. I want my house to be interesting, warm and most of all inviting. I hope I can find a way to hang my favorites. Wait! They are all my favorites.

I choose art because I like it, and I have a lot of it. Now where a particular piece hangs in the house, that depends on decor a bit, and available space. On the rare occasion when I've bought a piece to "go" with the decor, I've usually found it to be bland and regretted it. That doesn't mean I don't have mass market art, just that the pieces I do have were purchased because I genuinely liked them.

I buy what I love and I love far too much.

Like you all, I want my art to be personal and meaningful to me. I’ve had one blank wall for two years in this house until I found what spoke to me. And I should include my DH — he also loves to hunt for interesting art. Fairs, antique malls, boutiques, etsy, local artists, traveling, etc. We have lots of passed down art, too.

I was looking at local real estate recently, and counted six houses with a big, giant, colorful cow face canvas. Again, to each their own, but I would not want the same exact art as all my neighbors.

I love, love, love art. I do somewhat intentionally match it to my room, usually with a common color. That does not mean the dominant colors are all the same, maybe just splashes. I know this is not a popular practice in these forums. I also match the theme of art because I am drawn to people. 99% of my art is of faces. Because I am drawn to particular colors, most of my art and my decor also reflects that. My home contains art that I love but it must also fit the criteria of being able to decorate my space in terms of size, color, and theme, all while speaking to my soul.

Even though I coordinate my art, my house is the exact opposite of Home Goods. Truth be told, I do have a handful of items from them ;-). You can still have interesting and unique spaces that are not all matchy matchy while still coordinating art.
