Dead spaces in living room and kitchen

first dead space is in my sunken living room behind the L shaped sofa. Currently houses my kitten‘s world Where the piano is. Do I place a console table behind the sofa? Do I leave it dead? do I place a bench? It’s such an eye sore.

this is going to be gutted and renovated in a few years and I’m eventually going to add a peninsula. I don’t know how to make this place visually appealing. I’m trying to get rid of the dead space. Here are some ideas I came up with:

do I place a bench under this odd window?

I am going to replace the railings...do I convert that to a pony wall? or place a console table under the window? I need storage in this kitchen and I have a dining room...do I convert this in a breakfast nook? The first picture is taken from the frint door and I want it to be visually appealing from the hall.

Your first photo shows litter boxes placed below an electric piano. If the piano is so seldom used that you can keep litter boxes below it, pack it up—store it or sell it. Put a room divider SCREEN in front of the litter boxes if they have to remain here. However, it is much better to put such things as far as possible from where people gather. These should not be visible from the front door!

Nothing should go in the open space of the 2nd photo. It's the entry to your living area and needs to be at least 36" wide, though 42" is preferred. Not every open spot is wasted space. In the 4th photo there is a door on the right wall between the counter and the railing. The space in front of it is pathway that must stay open. You have to allow space behind a door for it to open properly.

As to the rest of the photos, I do not understand most of the scribbles. Also, the photos are too narrow and too dark to see the rooms. Turn on all the lights in a room. Bring in a portable FLOOD LIGHT if necessary. Take a photo from each corner standing against the wall. Outside light is less glaring if the day is overcast, so won't wash out the interior when taking photos towards a window.

You can solve some of your storage problem by going through your cabinets. Get rid of anything broken. Give to charity anything that you do not use. This means extra vegetable peelers to plastic storage containers to pots and pans. If something has sentimental value it should be stored with similar items where it can be seen. Do you have a section of wall where you could put a kitchen cart? If your kitchen is wide enough you can put a small one in the center like an ISLAND. Storage caddies can go on the inside of a closet DOOR or CABINET. There are pull out RACKS for baking pans and cutting boards. Do an online search for kitchen storage. There is a wealth of products.

Do you have a laundry room to relocate all the litter box You don't want that in your main living area.

Jmc, I think sq. footage plays a large role in how we use a room and what we choose to name it. I'm finally understanding "The Great Room" name if it's based on being centered in an open floor plan. But it's still a plain old living room. To me, Great Room implies a large room. It just doesn't make sense to call an average size room a Great Room. lol. I'm just glad the majority of people here still say LR. When we built on and remodeled, we deliberately made the LR large so it could be a fun and functional room not only to entertain in, but also used as a multi-purpose room. We can do our own thing together and still have our own space. It doesn't bother me at all if someone's watching TV and I'm doing something else. We added a 3 walled book nook w/built-in's and a window, which is a smallish room off the LR. The LR also has a very large cooking FP, large closet in the back of the room with built-in's. One side of the closet was custom made for the Christmas tree and decortions, including wrapping paper. :) The front half of the room has the sofa, chairs, coffee tables. The sofa is in the center of the room facing the FP and TV. FP is in the corner. A sofa table behind the sofa "divides" the room. The back of the room which is just as large as the front half holds a large, round Persian rug with a wood dining table and chairs in the center, aka "Game table." I do many tasks on that table. Great place to wrap presents and watch TV! We have another seating arrangement in the back of the room along with a writing desk and chair. I love sitting there paying bills and looking out the window towards the creek and road. There are 16 places in the LR for people to sit and not be crowded, and plenty of space to bring in extra chairs. My room is merely a living room. There are 2 large areas to put pallets down if we wanted to lay on the floor. Which we've done many times. There are two offices in the house. Saturday night another couple spent the night, the men in the LR playing guitars and watching movies. My friend and I got on the computers and watched TV. We had so much fun I got one hour of sleep! So we do have different areas of the house to play in.

Photo for inspiration as you have not given measurements for each area: Position the back of a loveseat with back facing kitchen area. Possibly you could put a sofa table behind. Entering, the area will look spacious and welcoming.

What’s to the right of where you walk in??
An eat in area would be nice but I eel like it’s too small of an area for that. Looks like the table would fall down the steps lol. I would remove the entire railing and just have a nice step down. Painting or ridding the paneling is a great idea and possibly having one wood floor throughout the house. There’s TONS of potential here.

A console or bench behind the sofa would work well to hide the litter boxes...but is there another wall for the piano? Consider a built in bench for storage under the window in your kitchen.
