Has anyone ever made onion pie?

My husband found a recipe online that calls for 6 lbs of sautéd sweet onions, eggs, sour cream, bacon, and caraway seeds, then baked in a pie crust. We have it baking as we speak. Just wondered if anyone has tried similar recipes, or has suggestions. If we like it, it will be an additional reason to grow more onions.

OK, just finished Sunday dinner (our noon meal) of onion pie with brats on the side. I have to say the dish was quite sweet, due to the sweet onions. We decided that Swiss cheese or some hot pepper flakes or other savory seasonings would help to balance the sweetness. Mushrooms could be another delicious addition. I would probably just prefer a heavily onion quiche, rather than the overwhelming onion content of this pie. I still look forward to any onion recipes. Anyone with a great French Onion Soup?

Sounds a bit like Tarte Flambee or Flammekueche, albeit thicker and with more onions. I love onions and I'm sure I would like the recipe you made, though personally I never cook with sweet onions even when they are called for in a recipe. IMO they have no flavor at all when cooked, especially when caramelized. It seems counterintuitive that a yellow onion would be sweeter and more flavorful when caramelized than a sweet onion, but that is the case in my experience. Your suggested addition of cheese or spice would definitely help!

Hi Pam!! I'm here!! I just made the salad again for our Christmas feast-there are pics of the salad on my FaceBook page! The recipe is on my old computer so I just wing it and use all sort of salami, ham, provelone-toss in some raw veggies such as bell pepper, celery and onion for crunch. I only use Barilla tiny bow ties for the pasta-I just like the way they look and they are the perfect size. toss everything together with Jardines Muffeletta Spread and there you have it!! I'll most likely make it next time Amy comes home. Cheers! Susie

IÃ¯Â¿Â½ve never made it but the horchata we drink in Spain is made from tiger nuts, water and sugar. No cinnamon. We used to drink this ice cold in summer in Mallorca where they sold it in large iced dispensers at the bus stops and in cafe bars. The chufa nuts were also sold in rolled paper cones at bus stops. Horchata de chufa is also sold here in cartons like milk. ItÃ¯Â¿Â½s not too sweet, tastes a bit like a vanilla milkshake (not so thick) and is very refreshing on a hot day. HereÃ¯Â¿Â½s a quote from Wikepedia. "In Spain, it usually refers to orxata de xufa (horchata de chufa), made from tigernuts, water, and sugar. Originally from Valencia, the idea of making horchata from tigernuts comes from the period of Muslim presence in Valencia (from the 8th to 13th century). It has a regulating council[4] to ensure the quality of the product and the villages where it can come from, with the Denomination of Origin. The village of Alboraia is well known for the quality of its horchata. It is served ice cold as a natural refreshment in the summer. Oh Carol, thanks for the grin! Yes, I think Winnie The Pooh would thoroughly enjoy this cake! Annie, I took that photo before we (me, DH, and his BFF) dug into it at the restaurant... Oh yeah, I just find it soooooo difficult to eat those experiments! (NOT!) Thanks for the input! I figure I'll make the layers on Tuesday, fill on Wednesday, and tuck into it on Thursday. It's supposed to be good for at least 4 days when it's all finished...or else, it never lasted past that 4th day because it was gone into people's tummies! Smiles, Sooz

I'm interested to see the answer, but I don't think I can trust anything less than chemicals. All I do is burn. I have to have the most water-resistant, longest lasting stuff out there (Bullfrog gel). Here's a link to a recipe. I almost trust it since it has zinc oxide in it. That is great sun blocking stuff.
