Size of pendant lights over island.....

We have a kitchen island that is approx 8'x5' . We are thinking of putting a PBTeen pendant over the island that is 9" wide by 17.5" high but are worried it may be too big. Is it appropriate to have such a large pendant over an island?

It really depends on the entire space. Can you post a picture?

Here is a really rough drawing - the table and chairs will be approx. 6 feet from the wall. Approx. 7-8 foot diagonally from the island.

I would go larger if you are set on two pendants, otherwise they'll look tiny over the island. One way to to test the look is to make paper cutouts of different sizes and test them over where your island will be. Is electrical already in the ceiling for lights? It appears to be new construction in photos. I would go off of that first... only due to what spacing might be set up as already. Personally I would go with 2 larger or 3 smaller ones. It doesn't look like there is any seating from the photo so they wouldn't be in way from that perspective. Just line of sight from the rest of the kitchen outwards.

I think one might be too few. Did you see this picture on the PB site that someone posted in reviews of the lights in their space? Their island looks like it might be the same size as yours. Theirs is clear so it visually takes up less space, but I think two will look nice over your island.
