Why do the different paint where I live oil based has not been avaiable for a long time and who wants the stink for weeks anyway. There are great acrylic paints that are tough for trim and water based which is totally better than oil.

As for the smell, I won’t be going back in the home for several weeks after the paint is applied. The availability issue so far is not a problem in my area of the country, however, could be an issue in the future. As for the reasons why to use oil based vs latex, there are several reasons...I won’t bore you. I just wondered if I’d be able to tell a difference if I used oil based on my baseboard and left my crown with the latex. Seems senseless to paint something that doesn’t need painting. My baseboards and door casings have to be painted, so I’ll do that for sure and then see what I think. Thanks for you input.

I guess, it is your choice, as long as you pick the exact same color and sheen. Be aware though, that down the road, they wont match, since oil based is prone to yellowing after a while, and latex is not.

are you doing white? white oil base will yellow over time. otherwise, they should look the same if both are the same sheen.

Advance is a hybrid that looks and goes on like oil, but cleans up w/water. The good thing is, it won't yellow.

As for straight latex paint, that is meant for drywall and not trim. Trim paint should always be an acrylic like one of the hybrids, or the regular oil base. (which is hardly sold anymore.)

Thank you a Beth. I didn’t get int to the specifics of the paint that was being used. It is not latex, but could be some type of hybrid oil based paint. I just know it is not latex. The painter likes to use it because it shows less brush marks and has a much nicer overall look.

sandra, that's why I brought up Advance. I paint a lot w/ it. It goes on like an oil. has self leveling properties and hardens like an oil base. clean up is a breeze and no smell.

for the best oil base on the market, look at Fine Paints of Europe Hollandlac. One of the few, if not the only companies who will guarantee their oil base whites not to yellow. The finish on this paint is amazing. And they also have a Hybrid that is water based. The EcoLine.

Oil is being discontinued everywhere for health and environmental reasons and down the road, you will also have to do extra steps to remedy before using latex.

Over 20 years I have personally painted the interior and exterior of our two homes with latex - every room, including trim, baseboards, doors, and kitchen cabinets. There is no need for oil, especially with great latex alternatives and painter can use a narrow sponge roller on the wider flat areas and a brush in the curved area if you have a concern about brush strokes. I used these on my kitchen cabinets and finish Is perfect.
