Perennials Lilies

My spider lilies are not naturalizing very well

I wanted more naturalization and I've read that these spider lillies do well for that.

However, after several years, i feel like I still pretty much just have the 5-6 plants that I have every year. They continue to come up faithfully but I don't see that there are more and more over time.

Now whether those are the same bulbs every year, or old ones dying off and new ones came up in their place, I don't know.

I'm just wondering if anyone who grows these, sees them naturalizing well and what are the growing conditions that you have. Assuming I've got the same plants year after year without more coming out, then it might mean my plants are barely surviving and not really thriving, which means I'm probably not growing them in the right conditions. TIA!

Some species naturalize more than others. Some (squamigera) come up in my lawn from seeds as well as massive bulb propagation. My aunt has been trying to rid her yard of L squamigera for for eight years and they still come up.

For native conditions, research climate in China and Japan. Which is said to be very similar to my conditions in the American South, thus why so many plants from that area are considered invasive here.

I have L. sprengeri, and have divided the bulbs many times.

I am interested in both of the hibiscus and the columbine. I have LOTS of daylilies if you are interested in those. Hmm, I'm coming to this thread quite late in the game . . . But, if you're still looking, I have some fun stuff you might like. I have lots of big white callas (the traditional callas that get to about 3'-4' tall), fragrant yellow ginger (Hedychium flavescens), lots of Red Hot Pokers, white Lily of the Nile (Agapanthus) and other things on my trade list. I'm a huge rain lily fan and grow a ton of them in my garden, since, as you said, they don't need to be attached to life support (drip irrigation), LOL. Almost every nursery in the Phoenix area sells rain lilies, including most big box hardware stores, so you shouldn't have any trouble finding them. If you like more obscure/new varieties, check out the Plant Delights Nursery catalog/website. I've purchased several new hybrids from SE Asia from them (love their catalog contents, HATE the catalog covers, LOL). McClure and Zimmerman, the great bulb company also offers rain lilies and various spider lilies in their catalogs too. They have some neat subtropical bulbs which thrive here, although you'll have to weed through a lot of cold winter spring bulbs too. Let us know where you find them and how they do for you. I believe mine is the L. radiata. Another year or two since my original post, and the spider lilies exhibit similar growth patterns as before. Nothing in particular that shows they are multiplying but if I'm to believe that the flower scapes could represent the number of plants, then it's possible I've lost a few plants
