Have you ever been so sick you thought you're going to die?
Comments (56)Well what a great report from you, pitimpinai!! The last I heard you were still very low in energy and still on a ton of medication and little appetite, and listen to you, helping the neighbor till up a lawn! LOL What a nice neighbor you were to plant tomatoes and Dahlias. :-) I am happy to hear that you've also benefited from a shorter work day. Great that you had all that time off saved up. I bet you really needed it to get your energy back. We have gotten pretty much back to what is normal for us here. The weather has been stupendous in the past month! I have never seen the cover crop in the veggie beds so high. We've also gotten all the leaves mowed and collected in bins, ours and three neighbors. [g] We have gotten somewhat cleaned up for the year in the garden, but I keep adding to my list of what I want to get done before the weather turns. Still have a small amount of bulbs to plant and three shrubs to get in the ground, some pots to clean and put away and that will just about do it. I am actually looking forward to a break from the garden. Not that we don't get outside and enjoy it, but it's nice this time of year, to focus on other things. During the gardening season, the garden seems to push out other priorities. [g] I enjoy the winter garden and by the time spring comes, I am just itching to get back to a new growing season. Glad you are able to enjoy gardening again and hope you stay well this winter! :-)...See MoreDo your vet bills scare you?
Comments (55)How about a different perspective? I'm the vet. As far as PetMeds, they are NOT a reputable company. They routinely ignore refusals by doctors to not renew medications, they routinely give Rx without seeing a pet without even having an Rx from a doctor, they routinely are in trouble with the law on these issues. And the hospital where I work is cheaper anyway. Plus, with Walmart offering generic Rx for $4/month if there is a way your pet can benefit from one on the list, ask the vet for the written Rx. We don't charge an Rx fee for any pet seen and diagnosed by our hospital. And since you can get many antibiotics and chronic meds for less there, why not? Fosters and Smith is reputable- they have never been in legal trouble and we have been very happy with them. A lot of veterinary practices rely way too heavily on diagnostics, but I don't think it is the vets' fault. In this age of litigation, we are all guilty of practicing CYA medicine somewhat. Yes, I can see petechia on the patient so I know her platelets are way too low, and she's pale and her heart rate is up so I know she is anemic, but if I don't run a CBC to prove it and patient dies and owner sues for malpractice, I'm pretty much stuck with lawyer bills, missed work, paying expert consultants, and in danger of losing my ability to practice which means I have $100,000 in school loans and no way to pay them off. So guess what? I run the CBC, even though I won't learn anything or do anything different based on the results. You have a right to refuse anything your vet recommends. You have a right to know what the vet is hoping to learn from the results of any test, and what will change in the treatment of the patient based on those tests. If your vet can't explain the answers to those questions satisfactorily, then refuse the tests. I will say that even in my healthy dogs, I run CBC, chem, and UA once a year; twice a year when they get older (above 7 since my dogs are large breeds). I'd add a T4 in a cat above 10 years. Pets can't say my liver doesn't feel quite right, or I'm always a little dehydrated because my kidneys don't work that well anymore, etc. And they hide symptoms until something outright FAILS, at which point it's a losing battle. Caught early, there are many things one can do for a cat with renal disease, or a dog with liver disease, but once they start showing symptoms, the disease is so advanced you are unlikely to provide any increase in quality or quantity of life. However you still have a right to refuse to do that testing if you don't want to and understand the value of annual or semi-annual testing. We can do a lot more for our pets now than ever before. Used the be unusual for a cat to live past 10 years, now I consider them young if they die at 14. I expect cats to live to 20 for the most part. I work at the cheapest vet in town, in a very cheap town. We haven't lost any business and in fact it is growing. We are however treating many more preventable diseases such as parvo, heartworms, GI parasites, tick-borne illnesses than ever. And we've been seeing people delay treatment for sick pets to the point of it becoming MUCH more expensive to treat, but they feel guilty and go ahead anyway. It's not the way I like to see the bottom line increase. I will be more than happy to discuss vaccines in another thread. Or I can refer you to this website. Take special note of the duration of immunity and realize why annual vaccines for FVRCP, distemper, and parvo are stupid. Comments (11)What BIG dogs! I have four and the largest is a Lab. Smallest weighs less than 7lbs at 7 months. I don't usually throw so much of the same in one room, but when we built this house, DS said he "did not want dead things in his (guest) bedroom." Like we ever had dead things around the house when he was growing up! lol Since we live in the woods, I didn't want to go that direction, so I went with dogs. Corner to left of bed. These are new prints and one of the last things I bought. Tired of searching for older prints with dogs that would work with the room: I went a tad overboard. Have two pictures in a drawer. :-/ I bought the material for long pillow on bed from ebay and had a friend sew the pillow. It features a hunting scene with dogs and horses. We live in a horse community, so i like the horses thrown in. The room is quite large (16x12) so things are fairly spread out. Doesn't scream DOGS when you walk in. lol Corner to right of bed. Dog TV lamp from the 50s is one of the first things I bought for the room. I had it made into a table lamp: Better photo of vintage picture: Dogs items on/above highboy: Vintage etchings over desk. We have a wheat Cairn Terrier that looks just like the bottom etching: There is a vintage dog bookend for a doorstop in the room, but no photos. I have two Boston Terrier doorstops in the house (one black/white, one brown/white). Cat lamp in sunroom. Was mine when I was a baby. Vintage etchings in kitchen on either side of range/hood. One features deer, the other dogs:...See MoreWhat have your pets done to your homes!?
Comments (109)I have two new rugs I haven't put down yet. I need to prepare and get a dog gate to put the innocent looking little white dog behind when I leave the house to walk the Rottie. I always take her out before the walk but she always manages to squeeze out some pee an poo on the game room carpet just to let me know that all the attention is meant to go to her. Sometimes she does not think I notice the game room carpet so she does it on the carpet runner in my bedroom so I'll step on it on the way to bed. Next, before I lay the new carpets I need to go to Costco and get some pepper to sprinkle on and around the holes that the Rottie is digging around the house...thus tracking in much dirt. I also need to change the wall paint from flat to satin finish so I can repeatedly wash the walls that the digging Rottie and old Retriever lay against. For some strange reason my Retriever licks the base cabinets in the Kitchen. At night when I give her her pills in peanut butter she goes up to the cabinets and licks them. I'm so glad I didn't do the painted on the bottom as well because the dark stain works a bit better for hiding dog droolies if I don't see them right away to clean. Oh and my slider windows to the patio are starting to look abstract due to a hundred and twenty pounds of Rottweiler nails jumping on them. However, I think he's getting trained against doing that and now just bangs it with his head when he wants to come in. But...I have no chewing so I'm thankful for that....See More3katz4me
