What a lovely entry! I agree that either a console or a bench could work in that spot. If the console is as high as the chair rail, I would find one with a width a few inches shy of the chair rail length. You could place a plant, umbrella stand, or even a one-seat bench/stool beside it. Any of those could echo the stair-step with your furniture.

You might look for something circular to hang in the triangle space of wall under the stairs. A mirror or sunburst could be fun. Alternately, you could use the console to lean a rectangular mirror or art against the wall. With a lean, you could overlap the stair trim a bit. (You might still attach it to the wall at the top so it doesn't fall down.)

With either a bench or a console, you could just use a runner to connect the front door to the next doorway. Or you could use a rug that fills the space a little more, continuing under the console or bench. For rug size, I would measure off the walls about 6" each and line up the front of it with the bottom of the stairs. That would be the maximum size I would get.
