This week, let's focus on transportation. We'll do motored such as roadways and bridges; manpowered such as walkways and bicycles; water transport such as ships, ferries, canals, rivers; by air; and finally others such as pipelines, animal powered, trains, etc.

Today show me air transport.

You are right, dragonflywings! He was riding in a 4th of July parade entry. Gulliver's Travels sounds good to me. Annie, I went looking for quotes from John Le Carre's books or the George Smiley character and this one seems like something a dog might say - "if we lavish our concern on every stray cat, we never get to the centre of things."

Extraneous Information: Significance of horse pose in statuary. Copied from a web page. A horse statue with legs raised in the air is said to signify that the rider was killed in battle. Although this is a common belief among some equestrians and artisans alike, this designation is not universally applied. At some historic sites across the United States and in other countries, horses with both legs raised are found with riders who were not killed in battle. Some views maintain that a horse statue with one leg raised is associated with a rider who was injured but did not die in battle. Others views contend that this is symbolic of a rider who was not only injured in battle but died at a later time from those injuries. A horse with all four feet on the ground is said to represent a rider that was neither killed nor injured in battle but who died away from the battlefield of something unrelated to war or battle. A significant number of horse statues in Washington, D.C. and in London, England, do not follow these alleged protocols regarding leg location on a horse statue. The U.S. and the U.K. are the two countries in which the contentions about horse leg statue positions are most prevalent.

Wow - that LR looks pretty spacious for an RV, Lynn! My grandma's kitchen in Kenosha, sometime in the 1970s. Photo taken by me of photo taken by my sister. Looks like that's a plate of her beloved Lithuanian cheese dumplings - called 'vitinnis', but I'm not sure that's how it's spelled.

Model airplane club's show a few years ago. So zoomy!! The yellow one was the biggest by far; it finally got off the runway but didn't get far before crashing in the cornfield.

As a longtime volunteer at the All-American Soap Box Derby held in Akron, OH, I often see one of the Goodyear blimps passing by. This was a few years ago while on the finish line bridge.

Another time when it was was so close you could almost touch it. Definitely a bucket list item to catch a ride.

Cool pix! Mine is similar to Maire's except with a propeller. Taken by my husband on one of his travels in the 1960s.

Fighter jet from China Lake Naval Air Weapons Station.
Photo taken from my open SUV (by my brother) on Hwy 178 on our way to Panamint Springs in Death Valley. Two planes swooped down right over my car on the highway and scared me quite a bit, especially since the back of my SUV was open. We talked with other people in Death Valley who told us that they same thing happened to them. It was like the crop dusting scene in North by Northwest.

Alisande, I see your pic and can't help but be reminded of the Twilight Zone episode with William Shatner when the creature was on the airplane wing tampering with the engine...

Lars, my first guess was a drug runner. We heard a few stories about planes dropping loads out in the desert at night. You often have great visibility. People would spot a plane and then see headlights racing out to the area.

This is an airplane that is hanging in the terminal of our small regional airport. I recently saw the Goodyear blimp parked there. If I hadn't been driving by, I would have loved to stop and get a picture of it. The two murals on either side are mosaics that are quite old. The terminal recently closed The Sky Galley, a wonderful old time restaurant that had good home cooked type meals and views of the planes coming and going. It will be missed.

lars, you may know that there's an overlook (scenic view parking lot) on Hwy 190, the road that enters Death Valley from the West, that's on the edge of what has been come to be called Star Wars Canyon. Jet fighters from many different bases (not just China Lake) would regularly fly through it at low levels, lower than the people watching from the viewing spot, to have fun. It attracted a crowd of regular enthusiasts/watchers. I've been there a few times.

Sadly there was a crash not too long ago and I think there's no further activity or it's at a reduced level. Do a search for Star Wars Canyon to see what the experience looked like. I also found an LA Times article
