Model airplane club's show a few years ago. So zoomy!! The yellow one was the biggest by far; it finally got off the runway but didn't get far before crashing in the cornfield.

As a longtime volunteer at the All-American Soap Box Derby held in Akron, OH, I often see one of the Goodyear blimps passing by. This was a few years ago while on the finish line bridge.

Another time when it was was so close you could almost touch it. Definitely a bucket list item to catch a ride.

Photo taken from my open SUV (by my brother) on Hwy 178 on our way to Panamint Springs in Death Valley. Two planes swooped down right over my car on the highway and scared me quite a bit, especially since the back of my SUV was open. We talked with other people in Death Valley who told us that they same thing happened to them. It was like the crop dusting scene in North by Northwest.

Alisande, I see your pic and can't help but be reminded of the Twilight Zone episode with William Shatner when the creature was on the airplane wing tampering with the engine...

Lars, my first guess was a drug runner. We heard a few stories about planes dropping loads out in the desert at night. You often have great visibility. People would spot a plane and then see headlights racing out to the area.

This is an airplane that is hanging in the terminal of our small regional airport. I recently saw the Goodyear blimp parked there. If I hadn't been driving by, I would have loved to stop and get a picture of it. The two murals on either side are mosaics that are quite old. The terminal recently closed The Sky Galley, a wonderful old time restaurant that had good home cooked type meals and views of the planes coming and going. It will be missed.

lars, you may know that there's an overlook (scenic view parking lot) on Hwy 190, the road that enters Death Valley from the West, that's on the edge of what has been come to be called Star Wars Canyon. Jet fighters from many different bases (not just China Lake) would regularly fly through it at low levels, lower than the people watching from the viewing spot, to have fun. It attracted a crowd of regular enthusiasts/watchers. I've been there a few times.

Sadly there was a crash not too long ago and I think there's no further activity or it's at a reduced level. Do a search for Star Wars Canyon to see what the experience looked like. I also found an LA Times article
