Decoratively challenged

We can’t decide what to do with our windows. We like the idea of plantation shutters but definitely don’t want them on the sliding glass door. We’re open to any suggestions and help.

I really dislke plantation shutters , the block light and views look heavy in most cases and IMO a PITA to keep clean if daytime privacy, UV control and heat control are issues get some solar shades then add drapes for night time privacy and just run the drapes all across that wall.

I agree with Patricia. Plantation shutters are a nightmare to keep clean. I have a houseful of them.

Good post! I enjoy seeing what others have done with this odd space. I have one too. It's been over 10 years now and I still have nothing on the ledge. (Except at Christmas. We had an outlet installed and put a tree up there that looks pretty from the outside.) It is such a wide space, that I am afraid that anything I put there to "fill up" the space will just end up looking like dusty kitschy clutter. On the outside of the house, the overhang does allow the front door to be protected under the overhang. So that's a good thing. It's just that inside it is so peculiar. So the conundrum continues... And I still have nothing up there.

Thanks for the thoughts everyone! Tribbix - using real oarlocks was my first idea, but I couldn't figure out how to fasten them to the wall so that they'd be sticking out the right way. I guess if I used either of the styles circled in yellow, below, with the 'top mount' hardware screwed into the wall, that might work. (Have the stem of that top mount thing sticking out from the wall and slide the stem of the oarlock into it.) I also considered buying 4 boat cleats (like the one at the bottom center of the picture), hanging them vertically, and lashing the oars to them with heavy twine.

Thank you! I actually talked myself out of it. I think it's a little too "fancy" for our house. I'm still in the infancy stage of decorating, so I'm going to take things a bit slower now. I have curtains on order for the LR, and got a new console table yesterday that I really like. I'll post again once the curtains are up. I will need assitance with accessories, I'm sure!

Decorating around Black Galaxy granite countertops

I don't have black galaxy I have absolute black countertops so not quite as "sparkly". My style sounds a lot like yours more traditonal/transitional. I did not want black countertops at all, but the granite I wanted was much more than I could budget for and the only way to get it was to put it on my island and have the absolute black on the perimeter counters. My cabs. are a cinnamon stained alder wood. To tone down the black I used tumbled travertine subway tiles which happen to match my island granite, but they def. tone down the black tops. Not sure if this is helpful at all, but here is a picture:

I'm a huge fan of plantation shutters, but I like PC's suggestion of shades and drapes in your particular case.

BTW, we have plantation shutters throughout our entire house, including the garage. I have to disagree with the above comments regarding cleaning. Ease of cleaning is one of their many advantages.

I will suggest roller shades, they look modern, elegant and there's a variety of styles. We supply roller shades of different types such as solar screen shades (for solar protection), sunlight filtering, and blackout shades. The example below look like the plantation shutters, but these are motorized and with different styles and colors.

What is it you "need?" Privacy? Glare protection? Or do you just want some oomph? Plantation shutters are very pricey and leave you with nothing for your glass door. I think they are not very functional. I suspect, by your "name" that you are looking for some "oomph." I'd look for a new rug and change out throw pillows to something white and maybe fuzzy, like chenille. As to rug choices, there are a zillion of them on Wayfair.com and they have professional decorators who can help you. No I don't work for them. I also like blinds.com.
