Overhead lighting is not good in living spaces. Get some floor and table lamps with shaded bulbs. Humans are more comfortable with lower level periphery lighting, and no glare!

Add dimmers, and buy some portable lighting. Table lamps. floor lamps. No room should be lit solely from above. That looks like a hospital and about as inviting. Get rid of the black spot lights too.

These IMO are too big of cans and the wrong bulbs but honestly I would only have them on when cleaning get some good lighting in the way of floor and table lamps in LED 4000K and change those bulbs to the same.

Would changing the cans to eyeball type and adding floor lamps help?

Eyeball will still annoy your EYEBALLS. Put the recessed on dimmer, please, and add lower lighting via LAMP light.

Lighting is layers. Recessed is ambient light, floor lamps and standing lamps are mood and task. A wall sonce is ACCENT

Most rooms, shall benefit from at least TWO of these varieties. It's not a surgical room. It's a living room.

This is such a common problem. What really needs to happen in any interior project is to think about lighting before the wiring goes in so you can plan a sympathetic lighting scheme, preferably with the help of a professional designer who will make sure you get it right.

Meanwhile you could soften the blow of the downlights by replacing them with fittings that have the bulb well recessed back into the fitting which will reduce the glare. Also they need to be adjustable so you can angle the bulbs towards the wall so they shine on to something like a picture which will create a feature, and at the same time reflect light back into the room.

Importantly make sure that you have 2700k bulbs as these give a warm white light that will be much more usable. And yes dimmer switches all the way. Good luck,
