Decided on new basement flooring, any comments?
Comments (1)I have used glued-down low pile commercial carpet without underpad very successfully many times on both new homes and older homes built as far back as the late 1940s. In case of water intrusion, the key is to remove it immediately with a wet vac, then use heat and dehumidification. The Wicanders website cautions that the glue down tiles must be protected from moisture..."Subfloors to be covered with Glue-down and Woodcomfort Glue-down(almost vapour-proof) require sealing (insulation) against rising damp if there is no cellar underneath ( basement ). Water-repellent concrete, crawl spaces or similar are not sufficient to prevent the migration of damp into the subfloor." Unless you have specific information from the manufacturer to the contrary, I would take the recommended precautions. Comments (6)We used a brand of cork called "Natural Cork". This is a floating flloor that is approved for below grade installation. We installed many sq ft of it 6 yrs ago, and it is fine. With that being said....I will not use cork again. It does not hold up well with kids. I have lots of gouges in mine, from what I would describe as normal wear and tear. My cork is very light. Perhaps, those gouges would not show up with a darker cork....See MoreBasement flooring--luxury vinyl tile? Marmoleum? Cork? Other ideas?
Comments (19)I'm the OP. We just returned from visiting a couple more flooring stores (we've now visited four flooring stores in total). One place today was absolutely excellent as far as having a long-time salesperson/owner who really knows her products and their uses in various applications. In a situation like ours she highly recommends using luxury vinyl sheet with a glue down installation. It will adapt to minor dips in the floor, it is all vinyl so could withstand possible water incursion, it won't have potential dirt in the edges like tiles would if there is a water event in the basement, it is durable (she showed us some great examples of what can be done to it without harming it), and it is reasonably priced (not cheap but not as pricey as many other options we've seen). I liked what I saw in the Mannington line wood-replicas because it is not cheesy looking, and it has an aluminum oxide coating to prevent damage to the floor. This floor would cost about 50% of what a marmoleum floor would cost us. Hope this helps anyone else who is facing the same dilemma we are facing about flooring....See MoreFloor recommendations for basement workout room?
Comments (3)I like an 'entry level' cork floating floor in a work out area (utilitarian pattern). You can seal the floating cork floor if you want. But it doesn't need it. Cork dimples (dents that pop out with heat) when heavy objects are placed on them for long periods of time (like a king sized bed, etc). An area rug underneath the workout bike will prevent the dimples from happening. You can use floating cork flooring throughout the basement area. It *should cost the same as a higher-priced laminate ($3/sf). It can do everything a carpet can do...and more. If cork floating floors (click-together flooring) interests you: www.icorkfloor.com Order some samples from Anne. If it is something you are going to work with, ask the builder to create a concrete slab that is ready for a floating laminate floor. That's all the prep you will need....See Moredarlingtonia
