I live in a 1910 neoclassical revival house, but I do not find neoclassical interiors at all appealing. In fact, I find them a bit pretentious. My approach was to retain the architectural details of the house: the columns between the foyer and living room; the columns, egg-and-dart trim, and acanthus wreath detail on the fireplace; the scroll corbels on the hutch; the board-and-batten panelling and coffered ceiling in the dining room; and the V-groove paneling and chair rail in the bathroom and kitchen. That's all backdrop. I rally didn't pull any of that into my furniture or furnishings at all. I have a lot of Ikea, West Elm, CB2, World Market. When making changes to more permanent house features, like hardwired lighting and my kitchen backsplash, I give more weight to the architecture of the house, but not when it comes to seating and tables and table lamps.

Dwell magazine often has articles showcasing modern interiors in or modern remodels of older homes. San Francisco Victorians, for example.

It leans Colonial Revival or French Provincial.

I think you can retain all the details and still go all out modern. It is a great look.

Think about reapplying the white wash on the brick and painting the shutters at light pale gray, a light green or a light blue to enhance the provincial look.

Go Modern it has a great Architectural Digest Magazine style exterior and they always show great modern interiors, boho interiors in these classic buildings. I would also paint the lattice black and sand off some of the too thick white wash like over the garage. I would move the topiaries back from the structure as well. Cool place!!!

IMO the exterior and the interior do not have to match. Get that horrible lattice off there now. As for the interior if you like modern since they already ruined the brick you might as well paint it now. This is my old house that we did not want to ruin the style on the exterior but did not stop us from have a very contemporary interior. Add a newgarage door a bit lees traditional and then go to work with some more modern landscaping design to have a nice flow.

Do you know the magazine Veranda? Browse through a couple of copies and I think you will find your interior scheme.

Thanks everyone! For comments on the lattice - yes it’s a screened porch, and of course it can be removed. What do you guys suggest I replace the lattice with? Maybe just nothing, apart from the existing screens?
