Certainteed Landmark roof shingles

We’re building a new home and are trying to decide on our roof color (I never thought I’d agonize so much over a roof). The house will be a modern farmhouse style with farmhouse white Hardie plank board and baton siding. We’re doing shingles on most of the hone, and a metal roof over the full front porch. The builder uses Certainteed Landmark roof shingles and Sentriclad architectural metal roofing. We had originally chosen Landmark’s driftwood color shingles, but there are some brown tones in it, and I’m looking for something that’s a true gray. I don’t want anything too dark, and am torn between the Cobblestone Gray, Pewter, and Colonial Slate colors. If anyone has pictures of their own roofs done in any of these colors, I would love to see them! TIA!

Hello. I’ve agonized on the CertainTeed colors as well for my ranch home. I can only say after driving around and looking at 50+ roofs that Colonial slate is a medium grey but with some visible red. The pewter definitely reads “blue” no matter what pitch your roof is and the cobblestone is a white/Gray that has a chunky looking texture due to the shadowing. If you are looking at the Max Def Pro (40 year shingle) vs the 30 year, be aware of the overall roof color has more variegation. Of those 3 the max def Cobblestone looks the least variegated but it’s a strikingly light color compared to other options. Good luck!

Thanks for your message! We actually ended up going with the cobblestone gray. The pewter definitely read way too blue for us, and the colonial slate was a bit darker than I was looking to go, and the red flecks didn’t help. I tend to gravitate towarda lighter roof colors, particularly on white farmhouses, so hopefully we don’t regret our decision. The cobblestone just looked the best with our other exterior selections below.

Newhomebuilder, your home is very beautiful, thanks for posting the pic. I've loved Driftwood when I've seen it in pictures on other houses. In fact it always looks gray to me rather than brown in contrast to brick. But when I tried it on our house using CertainTeed Colorview it looked a little too brown. Re: slate blend vs. colonial slate...soliciting a bit more advice...it seems that slate blend might be at least a little bit better for our house. Just wondering how much better and would it be worth the extra trouble and $$s to get the slate blend to Virginia.

A photo would help, but I wouldn't go any darker than the Pewter based on sml's photo. It would work with white siding and the other colors you mentioned. Depending on the house design, extremely dark roofs can be pretty severe and also create a lot of focus.

Triple layer would be a thicker, heavier shingle and carry a higher cost as well as typically a longer warranty. At the end of the day all the major players quality wise are the same. Different roofers prefer one brand over another for their own reasons, maybe they like working with one shingle over another for perceived benefits, maybe they like a supplier better or they buy at a better price point. Both Certainteed and GAF are definitely considered major players and I would not be afraid to use either one.

For $13 per square that is a no brainer but I would double check that. The pro of course is a heavier shingle so that alone is advantageous.

Excellent! That’s the color I’m considering for my ranch but still not 100% certain. Please post a pic! Also, Did you go with the 30 year or40 year shingle?

Once the roof is on I will definitely post a pic. We just went with the 30 year. Selecting a roof color is much harder than I ever imagined it would be. What color is your house?

My ranch home is a painted cedar that is a soft grey color. I’m open to painting it a different shade once I do the roof. I’ll snap a pic so you can see the pitch

Any suggestions on roof color are welcome. The paint color may go softer grey. Right now it has a touch of green in the paint color

I’m no expert on roof colors, but I think that with your home’s siding also being gray, that a lighter roof color would brighten it up and make it stand out more. Just my opinion, but everyone’s tastes are different.

You could also do weathered wood which has some nice variation between gray and tan tones.

The roof on here now is a Tamko Weathered wood. CertainTeed weathered wood is a little different and it might be an option but it has some brown in it.
