New siding - Hardie Iron Gray?
We may replace our siding as part of a reno/addition after demo discovered the original parts of the house have wonky framing and no insulation. I lean toward the replacement, my husband leans against, and a prior post here didn't produce a consensus one way or the other. So I'm hoping other factors will help tip the scales!
Right now we have Certainteed insulated siding; we'd replace it with Hardie planks, probably something dark since we're on a busy street and have a lot of trees. Online I like the look of Iron Gray a lot, but maybe that's too dark? I also like Night Gray and Evening Blue. Would any of one of those colors help improve the look of this small old house? The reno is also adding a 6x9 portico and the front windows are being made significantly taller and double hung. Thanks for any advice!

3 years agoThanks @Emily - that's a beautiful color. But it's a little brighter than I'd realized. I wonder if it's a too much for my crummy little house. I liked the blue-green-gray vibe as in the photo below, which is also supposed to be Evening Blue.

My best option might be Iron Gray, like the one below. It's dark but it also has some color at least from the photos I find here on Houzz. I worry that I don't see a lot of very dark houses though, and there must be a good reason for that.

Comments (4)We haven't yet but are pretty sure we are going to use it on our house that is under construction. It's a bungalow and will have a lighter gray stone skirt. We got a sample from a local building supply store. Our builder didn't have the iron gray in his sample box. There are a few photos of houses with it on the Hardie web site. I don't really like it with all the light trim they show though. We will have a black roof (architectural shingles), gray soffits etc., white window frames, black shutters. Right now the front door is white but we might paint it red. We were looking for a dark / charcoal gray and the only other one we found was a premium vinyl, which we were told was more expensive than the hardie. Comments (6)Hardie will send you samples. We have three greys currently and chose the one we wanted by taking them to our lot and looking at them in various lights. We are going with night grey. Here’s our garden shed (which matches our house) with Hardie board in Iron Grey on the body, Monterrey Taupe trim around the windows and doors and cedar shingles stained in Sico Natural. 6 months agolast modified: 6 months agoOur house is Hardie Iron Gray siding with black trim and I don't think it's gloomy at all (obviously still a WIP in this photo). We did the siding in a 4-4-7 pattern to give it a little more visual interest.
