New grass not as dark green

Hello everyone. So I've been slowly redoing my yard by killing the old grass and planting new grass. Jonathan Green black beauty ultra. It's been successful so far minus dealing with some triv that keeps showing up. The process I've been doing has been killing about 1200 sq ft so I can focus just on that. By redoing that size of lawn it takes time to completely finish the yard.

Anyway my last spot I did was in the summer. I know it's the worst time to do it but in order for me to do as much in a year, I have to do it. I watered the heck out of it and everything came up great, minus a few spots I reseeded.

So after about 2 months the grass is growing great and it's lush. However it's not as dark as the rest of my yard. Mind you it's the same grass. It's been fertilized and taken care of just like the rest of the lawn. There's a clear line where the new grass and my existing grass is. I don't know what is wrong. It's all fescue too. I've picked the lighter green grass and it's fescue for sure, which is what black beauty is primarily made of.

What could the issue be? Do I need to fertilize more? Did it get messed up from the heat by growing in such a hard time? Like I said this project was done in the summer in a spot where the yard gets a lot of sun.

That's normal. Newer grasses just don't have the root systems and aren't adults, and haven't attained their full adult coloration yet.

Give them time. It could be next fall until color matches the rest of the grass, but late next spring should show an improvement.

If you want to push things along, you could scatter a little Milorganite in that area if you want. The iron will help kick things along a little. But lighter coloration in younger grasses is not a sign of anything wrong.

Thanks for the insight. It’s just wierd because ive had new grass look dark especially two months after planting. I’ll probably take your advice and hit with some milo

I was hoping someone would answer your post cause it is kind of interesting. Perhaps it is because you have laid a lot of requirements on simple grass. I'm not sure there is one type that meets all of your desires. You may want to research the hybrid bluegrasses though some say the newer elite varieties of KBG are just as heat tolerant. Mixed with tall fescue appears to be popular with sod producers in the more southern parts of the transition zone. Overseeding bermuda with rye is a traditional southern golf course technique for green winter cover, but is expensive and can be hard on the bermuda. What level of maintenance, cost, and effort are you willing to go to to achieve your desires? The shepherds will wear out the grass if left in a small space. There is no grass that can tolerate that kind of wear without intensive maintenance. You may want to find out what grass is used on football and soccer fields in your area. Chances are that will be the most wear resistant. How do you intend to maintain the turf?

Carlos, This question reminded me of the dedication British golfers have for the sport. Somewhere in my files I have a copy of special golfing rules enacted during the grim days of WWII. Perhaps you have seen them. One of the rulings specified that if a ball was hit into a bomb crater it could be lifted, cleaned and placed two clubs lengths from the edge without penalty. However, if a ball was hit into a bomb crater which still contained an unexploded bomb, the ball must be hit as it lies. Moving it was a two stroke penalty. Your putting green plans sound right on target and should give you a good, free draining putting green. Suggest that it would be wise to talk with an area golf course superintendent who might have an additional thought or two.

Thank you all for the feedback. Unfortunately I haven't had a chance to try any of the above solutions, since I've been out of town most of the last 2 weeks. Attached are pictures of what my yard currently looks like, as well as a closeup of the lime colored grass. The last time I mowed was 10/5. The darker green areas are definitely ready to be cut again, but the light green is just over an inch long, so not growing as fast to say the least. Of all of the advice I have been given, nitrogen, iron, lime, organics, etc, and the weather getting cool very fast here in MA, which of these, or combination of these would be best at this point? I also want to lay a winterizer with weed preventer soon to be as ready for spring as possible. Please let me know your thoughts on next steps. Thank you.

I have the same thing in my yard. I have a KBG/PRG mix. In the middle of my yard I know it is from that area not germinating as fast as the rest of the yard. Howeve on the side by the pine trees the grass has come in really thick and is lighter than the rest of the yard. I don't know if that is because the PRG grows faster than the darker KBG and makes it look lighter or if there is another issue.

In case you're watering your grass appropriately, yet it's light green or yellow rather than dim green, your turf is doubtlessly supplement insufficient. Yellow yards by and large need key supplements, for example, iron and nitrogen. ... Chlorophyll neglects to be created when there is an absence of iron in the turf.
