Do stair runner & foyer rug have to match?

Getting new stair runner which is seen from the foyer (and is a smaller area). I’d like a rug when people walk in the front door as well. Should this rug match the stair runner? I do like to make a little statement with my rugs but will also need living room & dining room rugs which are on either side of the foyer. (Center hall colonial). I don’t want it to be too busy though. Help!

Have an overall plan and mix colors, textures and patterns according to good design principles. Just to be sure of what you want - Your stairs are carpeted now, and you want more carpet to put over them? That could be a hazard for someone not used to walking on them, with the increased thickness.They would have to be attached with carpet tacks just like the ones you have now. You can rent a rug cleaner or have someone come to your house to clean rugs, which may be less expensive and will be safer than a heavy runner on top of existing carpet on stairs.

oh good - glad to hear the runner is not as beige as it appears - taupe and white definitely coordinate better with existing. I would encourage you to fall in love with either an area rug OR a large piece of art for the wall over the sofa. Then that item will become your inspiration or jumping off point for the room. Also, the coffee table is too wide for the scale of the sofa and room. Lastly, make sure you get as big a rug as you can for that area. Check out natural or faux jute rugs. A neutral rug will give you flexibility in decorating your space.

It seems your foyer is nice and wide and a runner would look skimpy. I think you'd be best having a rug cut and bound in the dimensions that you need for your space. You could also just do one rug of a larger size by the door.

@ciaoginag Do you want to use these two as coordinating rugs? If so, where would each one go? I think the patterns are good together but the colors are not quite right; Chateau is too deep or the Damask too light for them to be perfect together. Might just be the picture. Which colorway are each of them?

No that’s not the color for the damask, just a sample. Comes in so many colors.

The smaller pattern should be on the stairs. When you consider how much of the repeat will show on the stair, the Chateau will look better.

I am getting a new carpet on my stairs. I have this rug in the foyer and was wondering if I should replace it? The bottom photo is the stair carpet. Thank you.
