Linen experts - why are my Pottery Barn sheets so scratchy?
Comments (33)Agree! I grew up with Wamsutta 300 TC percale sheets and they were great! I continued to buy them through my young adulthood and then the brand disappeared from department store shelves. The brand ended up at Bed Bath and Beyond and are no where near the quality they used to be. Then I discovered Ralph Lauren (RL) sheets who for many years offered 300 TC sheets which were great, but now I can't find those. I heard he moved his bedding operations from wherever they were before to India and the quality went down. I'm hanging onto my current batch of 300 TC Italian fabric RL sheets which I bought at Macy's for a reasonable price and which are almost 9 years old. I recently bought Matouk Sierra sheets and was disappointed mostly because the bottom fitted sheet has too much slack in it. They are pretty wrinkled too. BTW, the Matouk sheets don't come close to the smooth crisp feeling of the old Wamsutta or RL sheets. What has happened to the sheet industry? Are countries not growing enough cotton anymore? Is there a shortage of textile manufacturers?...See Morecheap belarus flax linen sheet sets on ebay and etsy
Comments (6)I decided to sew my own set!!!! and I love them! I found a local fabric store that imports 100% flax linen from Eastern Europe. Their linen fabric looked just like the ones shown on ebay and etsy. Got to touch and choose the weight- went with a heavyweight and it was a better price per yard! Prewashed- lots of lint! And got to sewing two king size flat sheet and two pillow cases, apron, bath and hand towels:) To center seam or not to center seam....decided to keep the selvedge and used that to sew the center seam- less chance of fraying. I figure after lots of wear and tear, once the sheet gets thin, I can remove the center seam, flip the sides, resew and have a "new sheet" as the outer sides of the sheet never wear. Its been a few months and regular washings. I managed to line dry twice but mostly used my dryer in medium or low, low when I remember. I bought extra fabric to make the extra stuff but ended up staying on budget....See MoreFlannel sheets question
Comments (6)I wash my LL Bean flannel sheets in very hot water, but use Tide liquid Free & Clear. Works great. I don’t think you need bleach if you use very hot water. In my lifetime of experience with flannel sheets of all brands, they will all pill and lose their thickness over time. I think you have to be realistic about that. I replace them with new every other year, i.e. they last two winter seasons. IMHO the two best brands are LL Bean and Pinzon 190-gram flannel sheets (sold on Amazon). You didn’t mention color. I never buy flannel sheets in colors, just white/cream. The colored ones fade no matter how careful you are, or if you wash only in cold water, it won’t matter, they will lose their color. Also if any in your family uses creams or skin medications, colored flannel sheets will spot, so I only buy white/cream....See MoreLinen sheets good idea?
Comments (3)Welcome to a lifetime of ironing. Linen is a NIGHTMARE because it wrinkles like crazy. If you want to do linen, I think I'd recommend a blend. I've ironed entirely too much linen in my time; it's a nightmare to iron because you have to use a hot iron, and it burns easily. Linen would definitely not be warmer in winter. It's a hot weather fabric, e.g. worn in the tropics. For winter, you need wicking fabrics, otherwise you have sweaty wetness against your skin. If you want to do winter and summer, silk would be a better choice. Linen gets messed up if you put it in the dryer, because it loses the airy spaces between threads. The airy spaces are what facilitates the evaporative cooling. How would you be storing your sheets? If they're in a linen cupboard, you'll need to iron them so they go in flat and folded nicely....See MoreFun2BHere
