Wood stove insert surround

Our house has an old wood stove insert that we will eventually replace but we need to wait a little while. I’m going to paint the brick dark grey and we are going to paint the insert black. What I can’t stand is how big the metal surround is. Do they serve much of a purpose other than closing off the fireplace hole? Does it need to be this big? If not, I’m going to have a steel fab shop cut it down some and rebend the edges.
I’ve already checked and it’s much larger than the fireplace opening. Also, the back of it seems to have some kind of insulation. It’s old and gross and I’d like to replace it. Any idea what it might be? It’s about 1” think and likes the back side of the surround.
