Help decorating new living room and kitchen

Hello everyone
We just bought a home and would really appreciate help with decorating.

What type of furnite would suit the living room? I really like white and tan/caramel color combination so I was thinking of a white sofa and loveseat, 2 tan leather chairs, and a wicker/rattan lounge chair along with a simple white patterned area rug. Would this go with my room?
There is space by the bookshelf, what can we do with it?
We are changing all the kitchen counters. What color and material should we choose? The sink will be replaced by stainless steel, and other appliances are also SS.
Could we change the overhead lighting to add some life to the kitchen space?

Hi. I could be wrong, but with several wall angles all in white -- wondering if a rug medium neutral would anchor the space [more than a white rug].

Neatened border in simple neutral goes with alot.

I love the clean, uncluttered look of your home and you've made some great furniture choices. My first thought, though, is that I would try to rework the sofa/sectional placement. It really is unwelcoming looking to me to have the back where it is facing a wall, when it could be oriented to look into the room and out the windows. It seems like if it were placed in the corner under the stairs that it would feel open and invite you to come in and sit. I'd hate to be cooking in the kitchen and have the family or guests with their backs to me. If you are having a TV in another room close by, do you need one in that room, too? If, so placing a 70" unit will probably only work as you have it. But, to me, it's not going to look like a living room but more like a movie theater, which is fine if that's what you're going for. It seems like it won't be a cozy conversation area, though. I might actually flip the rooms and put the dining room where you have the sofa now. I was looking at lights used with dining rooms and ghost chairs and saw this, maybe would work in the living room? Kind of fun. don't know if it would look as good without the colored walls though. And I thought something like these were interesting to consider for over your table:

There is a rule in design that you can have three patterns as long as they are small, medium, and large. I chose this first rug because it brings in some subtle color and is a nice contrast to the dark furniture. The large pattern wont compete with the medium pattern on the chair. I selected this rug as the second option because of the very large pattern and the contrast between the furniture, while keeping in the same color family.

I would start out with a large, beautiful rug in warm colors (terracotta or red Oriental rug mixed with other colors. I feel sectionals often confine you in how to organize your room. I would choose a fabric couch in a neutral, not too dark color (not gray, which is on its way out and not a warm color), and add two chairs in a different color or at least a different material and style. Try to keep the height of these pieces similar. Two end tables in wood (they don't have to be the same, but make sure the heights are fairly similar and a metal and glass coffee table would look great, with table lamps or floor lamps even if you have overhead lighting, which is always harsh. Pick colors from the rug for pillows and you'll have a beautifully coordinated living space. Books, good paintings and some tall plants will add warmth and personality to your room. People too often don't add these elements and then wonder why their rooms look bare and cold. This may be more colorful than you want to go. and this is a small rug because there is carpeting underneath, but it gives you the idea of neutral furniture and how it can be made more lively with accessories, pillows, coffee table styling etc.

Why so GA? I thought I hated fake fireplaces, but if I was going to have one, I would sure want it to serve the function of giving off heat . . . if I needed that. I live in the frozen north country. Otherwise, it is just something to dust to me. I also realized that if you live in a dark grey area of the country (I do), there is nothing wrong with getting artistic pieces that evoke the light and warmth of a fire. So much the better if you can chose sometimes to just have the light. My dad has one of those colored sparkly heaters in his basement, and at first I thought, "How gauche!" but when I changed my perspective and thought of it as a piece of art that not only pleases the eye but serves a function, I changed my mind. I don't much care for the look of a TV over the fireplace, and since I use my fireplace daily, I don't like thinking about how the heat would affect my electronics, but having a TV over the fireplace is pretty much ubiquitous nowdays, particularly in warmer climates. My comment was only to consider that I had a fake fireplace which had a SINGULAR purpose of being a decorative feature, and it took up way too much wall space to be practical for me, it was nothing more than something that was a pain to dust, and made me want the warmth of a real fireplace. It was too high to mount a TV over so mine was on a shelving unit to the side, but my TV was smaller than the huge ones popular today. When I bought the house it was a huge charm feature for me, but that faded very fast. Fast forward, my landlady once loaned me these big square space heaters to help with the heat in my un-insulated apartment. They had one function, to heat the room and were otherwise ugly black blobs. Here's a photo of my fake fireplace. A lovely white elephant. I did not think so when I bought the place. Of course YMMV, just giving you the perspective of someone who lived in a tiny house with a fake fireplace for 12 years.

Does this repeat the angles a bit? could be nice, and with solid upholstery. Repeats greys of fp and appliances, a small mention.

Where the books are, I recommend canvas art or a large mirror in that space. I would remove those books because they look misplaced.

What's the purpose of that bookshelf area? Form follows function. Do you want a game or play area for the kids? Or a reading nook. I have a reading nook in the living room. Comfy chair, art on the walls along with bookshelves and display of an heirloom doll collection (you may collect something different, just using it as an example, or even just nice dishes or vases or whatever you need shelf space for besides books), table and lighting. I have almost no indoor good light sources so in my reading area, I have plants on the table that is against the window. Only spot in the house I can enjoy a houseplant, YMMV.

But if it's meant to house a table and eating area, then that's another way to go, and the shelving area would be for dining items . . . maybe some baskets, etc. If you have crafty kids, it might be an arts and crafts area . . . etc. We need more information on your living area needs . . .
