Advice on adding curb appeal to home
Comments (22)The dark looks nice, but in a hot climate, I wouldn't go so dark. Also, your siding is rough cedar, which actually makes the paint adhere better. "1) Beveled cedar siding. The most common type of siding used on homes constructed prior to the 1990’s. While this material is still in use, it has been widely replaced with Hardie Board siding. You can expect to pay a bit more to paint your house if you have rough-cut cedar siding. The roughness of this surface is what makes it a durable product as it holds on lots of paint and also cools down faster. Back-rolling or back-brushing is an absolute must with this type of siding. Paint must be pushed into the texture to ensure a strong bond."...See MoreImproving curb appeal: White house, black trim, and red bricks
Comments (7)The red bricks are not really dating the house any more than the architectural style is. It is what it is......a mid to late century ranch style. And unless you do something significant to alter or amend that style, it will still read from that time period. Sure, you could cover the brick with ledgestone or a stone veneer but that is not going to change the style or necessarily "update" it. I think if you really want to update the exterior appearance, you need to get an architect involved. Any landscaping would necessarily wait until after all that was completed....See MoreAdd curb appeal to house
Comments (8)I definitely think spindles on the porch rail. And a wider path made of brick or stone. Match the handrail to the new porch railings. Maybe do handrails both sides of the stairs. It looks like you have doubled posts at the corners of the porch, with horizontal bars in between? I’d consider replacing with a single square post. I’d consider a different (darker ) color lattice below the porch, or even something other than lattice (siding or squares instead of diamond lattice) I also think the house is cute. I like the roof overhangs. It is fine the way it is too. Congrats on your new house...See MoreAny ideas for this fixer upper's curb appeal? Ugliest house on block..
Comments (11)celery gave you some nice updated versions. think about doing something w/that brick. It's the main thing that is holding back the curb appeal. i'm not as good as celery, but taking away the brick (discussed below) or painting it all white, dark garage door, lights, new door, AND I did a wood shake under the gable area, gives you a whole new house. of course the added landscape is huge. I'd prob do some type of walkway or path across the grass leading to the door just to break up that huge expanse. do something cool like the cement squares surrounded w/pebbles. you can make these yourself. this has a similar gable although this one is over the garage. if you white washed the brick, did something different w/the gable portion (maybe a composite shake or something?) Some other options. you could embrace the 50's and do some slat wood, maybe around the garage door You could also remove the brick altogether, and replace with siding or stucco removing the brick would let you do a vertical or board/batten siding....See MoreBarbara Stender
