Windows Design Dilemma

Gridded Windows

Hello! I am debating whether or not to have gridded windows in our house around the back and sides. I love the added texture it gives a window but won’t be able to do the semi divided lite ones, mine would be inside the glass. So the question is, how many divided lites should I do? The option is either 2 over 2 or 6 over 6. Will 6 over 6 look too busy? Will they adjust them with the size of the window?

I hate grids in windows but to get any answers you needto post a pic of your house and what are in the front?

Glass was also taxed on size in some areas (mostly in Europe) so the way to cheat the tax man was to use smaller pieces of glass which were less costly tax wise. (This was particularly true of mirrors which were heavily taxed). So it was both initial cost and cost later :) Just like us today LOL Windows were also made from the bottom of glass bottles in many places in the country. You see it on occasion in England and in original window's in cabins in the US (my grandfathers place had a couple). They were a poor man's glass window. I'd take a couple things into consideration in choosing. Style of house, and what you're blocking with the extra wood. In my home, I'd never want the smaller glass expanses because I am on a lake with fabulous views. I don't want tiny squares of lake...I want huge expanses of lake (some of my windows are 6'x8' picture). I'd never want to change that to fill a style desire :) But in some homes...the view is not a main feature, so I'd think about what looked best on the house, before I'd consider the view out of the windows.

I just found this thread and I'm in the same situation. Britepam1- did you finish your window project? Do you have an "after" photo? I also have a ranch style house, built in 1973. It has 2 big bow windows in front, which I hate. However, as I can't take them out, I have to live with them. We are in the process of starting to replace the original *ugly* windows. I love the look of the grids, but we have plantation shutters. Our consultant said grids with shutters would look too busy. I really want grids, but I'm having a hard time visualizing the bow windows with grids AND plantation shutters, from the outside. I looked online and can't seem to find an example that looks like my house. I want to update the house from the 1970s look and make it more cottage-y, or even more Arts/Crafts style (if that's possible with a ranch house). Any input? Thanks.

I wouldn't do grids on your house style. It appears you will have a lot going on. If you do, opt for the two over two.

You have windows already? How would you do grids now? The windows or at the very least the sash would need to be replaced.

Looks like you have two over two in front now. Should be same on all windows.

They installed the wrong windows so they will have to replace them if I ask. Do you think the 2 over 2 looks okay? Will that look funny on a larger window?

IMO the arched windows are already off and IMO no grids is what is needed since you have enough roof lines to build a hotel and what are the finishes on the exterior they have an effect on the overall look.

I would get no grid windows. It will help everything. Doing window treatments on arched windows will be expensive and tricky. Since they have to replace just get straight windows. They will have to fix framing but not a big deal. BUT watch the reinstall. Each window has to be redone for leak protection for every one of these windows and that is a nightmare to fix later.

I don’t think they plan to remove the windows, just the glass. At least that’s what I was told. I kind of like the arched windows but understand that they are a pain for window treatments
