Window grids on top sash only?

We will be replacing windows, and after a week of much pondering I have not decided on the window grids. We will be going with white vinyl Simonton double hung windows. Because the style is colonial, I would like to incoorporate grids, I just cannot imagine this style without grids. However, I find that grids on both top and bottom can appear busy and overwhelming.

I am considering 6 over 1 for the second floor windows and perhaps 6 over 1 or 9 over 1 for the bottom windows, since we will maintain a 60/40 split on the first floor. (This is all for the front elevation only.) The sides and back will consist of no grids.

Thoughts? I have not seen many half grid windows, so I am very nervous!

FYI: This is not our forever home, so investing in wooden grid windows is not an option.

Thanks!
