Help me re-do my family room

We are updating our family room Here is our current layout. Any other suggestions on layout that we might not be thinking of? Suggestions on curtains (I know these are hung way too low). Should front of furniture be on rug or show hardwood between (size of rug?) Timeless trends?

I do not always think furniture needs to sit on the rug in fact when I use persian or oriental rugs I do not sit the furniture on them. I agree we need to see the space I aslo agree the 2 worst pieces of furniture ever.This is my LR no pieces sitting on the rugexcept the coffee table

Thanks for the feedback everyone. I am recovering this week fron an injury and bored, bored, bored, bored, bored! It is SPRING outside which makes it worse! Because I can't do much, I thought I would at least try to make myself useful on Garden Web. :) Az- Your piece over the mantle was actually resized from something I found online. I know Hobby Lobby and Garden Ridge get tons of stuff every year. Also try garden centers. I couldn't find an online source because I guess that shipping for something that large and heavy is prohibitive. The windows were pieces from an iron shop online that I scaled to fit your window. Those were almost 15", but they have different designs in different sizes. They have a 200 page book of iron that is great fun to look at (but their web navigation is less than stellar) --- I think you are right about a lighter table. I love that your furniture is so grounded, but a little lightness would be great. Something like that one in Daisy's living might be nice. OH! I love those mirrors Johnatemp posted! I have copper on the brain right now. I have been searching for months for the perfect vintage copper tray to go under my dog dishes. (Yes, you read that right:)

The natural jute or seagrass rugs will not look as good on carpet and may permanently discolor the carpet. Plus, it is just another edge for kids to trip on, so I personally would not layer flooring in that room just for looks. Reluctantly agree with above poster who speculated that bar table, while cute, would end up as a horizontal surface only (read: repository for anything you need to put down) and not as an eating area. I would maybe get a bigger ottoman than the chair (if you replace the chaise) would need, and get a nice big melamine tray with sides and a handle for the top for their food. (If you decide you want to try a table I wouldn't try a round one if it is going up against a wall for obvious space considerations, and I would get a regular height one, not the pub height...... think kids horsing around and falling off those high stools, their center of gravity is pretty high.) I bought a bolt of green and white mattress ticking fabric online years ago and had slipcovers made for two sofas. The slips outlasted the sofas! The navy and white (more in real life like navy and off white) is very durable if the fabric is cotton twill and woven, not simply printed on the surface. If you google signal flag pillows (images) you'll see an embarrassment of riches. If you go the signal pillow route you can always just do solid color pennants on the rafters. There are etsy shops that will make them to order in the colors you desire or you might find them already made. I have to say though that I really like the flags on rafters picture posted above!

I really want to make the space more airy and elegant. I just don't know if I should design the 2 built-in bookcases to the ceiling and then join the 2 with floating shelves as shown with the blue tape, or just build 2 independent bookshelves. If I design 2 independent bookshelves, do I stop stop at the height of the French doors, or do I stop where the ceiling starts slanting?

How about a round table, 4 chairs, and a wall hung t v in the morning room? Our first house(1911) had a room off the kitchen and was referred to as the “breakfast room”. (It was a lovely, large formal home). We used that room for everything. Breakfast, lunch or supper; games, coloring, the t v for Sesame Street and Mr Rogers. Then later homework where I was close by cooking dinner and could help with any problems and oversee the results. We used the dining room for the special occasions and the formal living once in a while, As the girls got older, we refinished the basement for sleepovers and such. I guess my point is to set the house up for now. Time flies by and soon things changes. Then you have fun decorating again.

Find a pair of upholstered chairs in a similar scale to the sofa you plan to buy. Get them in a different fabric style, maybe even a print. Replace your art too. Get a rug that is wider than the sofa. You don't want it any closer to the hearth than 12"' 15-18" could work too. A real improvement to your room would be to install crown molding that matches your bookcases. Then hang curtain rods just under the molding. Hang curtains on the windows flanking the fireplace and just do shade on the double windows since there isn't room for them to stack and lie properly against the wall on either side. You can match fabric on both of them.

Are you planning on buying new furniture or using the furniture you have?

I don't know if it is the camera, photo or if the one wall is as brilliant minty aqua as it looks in the pictures. I would tone down the color if it is really as brilliant as it appears.

I also don't see much of a connection between the carpet and anything else.

The other question I have is do you like the TV over the fireplace.

If you are keeping the seating and like the TV over the fireplace, I think the furniture placement is okay. Allows 6 people to watch TV about as comfortably as possible.

I would switch out the carpet, getting one that has a bold pattern that fits under the front of the sofa and goes about 1' past the end of the love seat.

Curtains should be higher.

I would paint the accent wall the same color as the other walls. How many do you need to seat in the room? Do you plan to keep the lamps, artwork and tables?
