Exterior Design Dilemma Paint

Painting exterior stacked stone

Hello, I am wanting to know if I can paint stacked stone in my front yard. I’m wanting to paint the house in cool tones (either white or grays) and the stacked stone is preventing me from finding a good color.

The current stacked stone is called California Gold and it’s much too orange and warm for my liking. My house was built in the 50’s and I believe the previous owner painted in the 80’s. It’s very outdated. I will also be painting the ledgers of course.

Any advice is greatly appreciated!

Question is:

Can this be painted a light color?
Can it be whitewashed?
Limewashed?

Any ideas what to do?

I imagine just about anything can be painted, with enough paint. that stone might look pretty different next to a light gray chosen from among its tones, though!

I have that same stacked stone around mine. It's actually not the Calif gold, but the darker one called Goldrush. If you coat that stone with an enhancing sealer, it will darken and look a lot better

I used the enhancer on it.

I pained the house in Swiss coffee, Wrought Iron and a light gray.

I painted my house in whites/grays/blacks, and the stone works fine w/it. Hard to get a good pic because of the sun

try cleaning the stone well and then try the enhancing sealer to darken the blacks and gray tones.

BTW,

This is the Calif Gold color. we also have this color around a above ground pond

scrub and clean it w/a stone cleaner, rinse and let it dry. then apply this to it

If you still don't like it, then use Romabio. they have Classico lime wash, or they have a masonry paint for a thicker coverage

I know it sounds crazy, but we want to paint the stone/concrete block columns that accent our front porch. Our house is a 1906 house, with big stone or concrete blocks that were made to look like stone. They have a bumpy irregular surface, but are fairly porous looking, and almost look manufactured. At some point in the last 100 years, someone stained (?) them almost a black color, which has worn off unevenly. It almost looks like there was a fire, which we know there never was for this house. Unsightly,for sure. So, we tried pressure washing, but no color change. Someone suggested muriatic acid, but it's 4 large columns and all the base of the porch - a big area to cover. We'd like to seal them with something and paint them a light grey color to look like stone/concrete. Does anyone have suggestions for sealer? Each brick could probably soak up a quart of paint in their current state! I also don't want the paint to start flaking off in a year. thanks!

Personally I'm a huge fan of painted brick. I lived in a house that was painted Charcoal grey with bright white trim. One of my absolute favorite looks is brick painted white with black trim.....classy and timeless. I would paint everything, don't go with a natural color (like trying to match the stone) , go with the color you want your house. Yes, agreed it is permanent, even repainting another coat or color is a bad idea. One painting (meaning primer and two coats of your color choice) of paint on brick still allows the stone to show texture. If you start layering that up it looks cheap. Unless you have experience painting, you must hire a professional.

Have you already hired house painters? If so, does their company have a decorative finisher? (a lot either have one on staff or have someone they contract out to when needed). If not, depending on which finish you decide to go with it can be easy or slightly more complicated. Correctly applying a german smear takes more skill/talent than the internet would have you believe lol. I’d recommend finding a reputable decorative (faux) finisher in your area thats done an exterior in the past & has good references showing they know which materials to use and how to properly prep the surface. A white wash can be done a few ways: *Using regular house paint thats “watered down” using specialty glaze‘s which prevent the type of finish failure that using actual water would cause. *Distemper wash is both easy to apply & can be modified as the finish is worked on to achieve the look desired (either more or less color). Its made of natural slaked lime & has been used for centuries on exteriors throughout europe. The benefit of using a natural lime product are too many to list but the biggest are -permeability which allows the surface to breath (taking in & releasing moisture) -Limes has a high pH which prevents mold & mildew which is an important consideration for an exterior skirting.

I have no idea without seeing the spaces but usually fake brick looks fake and works best in spaces where real brick would have been used . I do not think interiors and exteriors need to match but I would need pictures of what you are planning and also wahy the brick at all.

tried to get a diff pic so you can see it next to the white stucco

I like having the contrast. why don't you try enhancing it and then painting the house. if you don't like it, you can always use the Romabio on it. I just think having a white or light gray stucco, and then the washed out stone, will make everything see a little too light.

The picture example is an entire side of the house that was done w/the Beige lime wash. this is a way to get variegated stone colors to look the same color

something else about the Romabio, w/the lime wash, you have 72 hours to decide if you like it! it will hose off within the first few days if you change your mind
