Remodeling Design Dilemma Bathrooms

Can I fit a bigger tub in this bathroom?

I'm looking to get a bigger tub in my kids bathroom. It seems like the walls were framed for a smaller tub/shower insert but I'm not sure if this was actually done for plumbing needs. The wall is on an angle towards the top so I would like to put in a new tub and just tile the walls to match the true angle. Can anyone tell from this design if I can fit a bigger tub in here if I take the walls down?

That is prety usual tub size what reason is there for going bigger? I guess you could go a bit longer but I see no benefit from that.

How old are your kids and for how much longer will they be using the tub?

A 5' tub is entirely reasonable for bathing 2 kids at a time. And once they grow to the point of wanting to bathe alone, they won't be tall enough to need a larger bath until they're teens. And by that time, they'll likely be taking showers.

There are no hard and fast rules for tile orientation. You can run them whichever way looks best to you. My daughter and my son both recently redid their bathrooms and put 12x24 tiles stacked vertically on the walls. They didn't have to decide on vertical vs horizontal for the floor because they used 24x24 squares on the floor. In my bath I have 10x13 vertical on the walls and 18x18 on the diagonal on the floor. IMO the large square tiles make their small floor spaces look bigger. Do your tiles come in squares too? Maybe you could put them on the floor. If you stay with the 12x24s on the floor placing then horizontal ( long side parallel to the tub may make your room look wider). You can still put the wall tiles whichever way you want. Thank you roarah and benjesbride. Roarah, agree the opening is inspiration picture is narrrow, we would want a 24" opening, which I think is possible: 36" width for tub, 24" opening" , 38" for glass wall which should be sufficient to keep most water out. Could have a curb too. Is 36" width for a tub unrealistic I wonder? benjesbride, I can move the door but it would disrupt the layout of the hall, so I prefer to avoid it if possible. But something to consider for sure. This bathroom would be primarily used by a now 9 year old boy and only occasionally by guests. We have ample linen storage elsewhere. I'm thinking I might be able to get away with something like this for the vanity, although I would at least 36" to comfortable stand in front of vanity. :

Yes! We actually got rid of that linen closet. I should've mentioned it. It was something our architect added, but I thought it was way too crowded. Good thinking about moving the toilet closer to the entry! I'll have to play around with some ideas. I hadn't thought of that. Our shower is also pushed out a bit to make more room between that and the sinks.

Smaller windows above the water line,and a big shower. I have a 4 1/2 x 10 shower and I thought it was ridiculous (and to some it is) but I really like having my own area. .We have shower heads on each end with a rain head in the middle. If anything were to happen, it easily would accomodate a shower chair or an extra person if need be. We are in Florida so temperature and being chilly isnt a concern. I wouldnt dissuade you from building a big shower. You have to weigh whats important to you. I had the same size shower as you have in my last home, the larger shower is a game changer.

They are 11 & 12 now so hoping this will last them through high school. My older daughter is complaining that it’s too short and she loves her baths.

I'd ask her if she'd be happy with deeper instead of longer. If the point is to submerge, deeper works better because you can still sit up and read a book (or whatever). Swapping out a tub is not so expensive. Remodelling a bathroom is. Let her help with the costing exercise so she can see the real-world consequences of what she's asking for.

That would make sense to me unless she is very tall a deeper tub is IMO what I like . I bath every night and love a good soaker tub and I am 5’9"

Great idea! Thanks for the advice. I’m definitely not redoing the whole bathroom. Only considering the tub area.
