Beam Refinishing

Love the beams in this new house but they are showing age. The issue is the varnish our whatever they used on beams is peeling some places and really need to be touched up somehow. I'd love to sand a stain but that seems very difficult and expensive. Since my contractor will already be there, was considering painting them. Love them so hate to paint white and have them get lost in ceiling but not sure what to do? Going for that modern farmhouse as we are replacing the stair rails with black iron ones. Stain Darker possibly (floor is Bronze Hickory)or paint black or dark grey like SW Iron Ore as we are painting trim outside that black or grey? Thanks for help y'all!

Please don't paint them. Refinishing of any sort will require sanding if they are currently varnished, so you're not skipping the sanding by opting to paint. Their current color is nice, but darker would probably work, too.

Hi No..They are in good condition, but they have 142 years worth of dust on them :) I think I definitely need to sand them to remove a lot of the grit, then dry vac them. The room they are in isn't the brightest room in the house, so the dark wood really sucks the light. From the floor to the lowest point of the beam is only 95" also. I gain 10 more inches leaving them exposed. I'd really hate to have to cover them, but I can't think of what I need to do to get them nice looking again.

If it is solid wood the tops can be sanded down. It may be more expensive than a traditional refinish. A good flooring person can tell you what would be involved. Sanding that much should be done by a professional. Also, you need to be sure it really is solid hardwood and not engineered - which probably could not be sanded very deep. The bevel groves are put on pre-finished floors to prevent uneven edges showing bits of unfinished floor- it just looks better with pre-finished to have bevels, but if sanded down and site finished, it would be fine.

I agree wholeheartedly. The ceiling looks great with the floor. mid century homes are prized possessions and valued for their style, not paint. The quality of the materials and workmanship are a thing of the past. Treasure what you have. I will never understand why anyone wants to paint beautiful wood, including wood paneling. If you must have a project and a different look, cover it with a thin material using tiny, inconspicuous screws, NOT adhesive. Fabric. Formica. But not paaaaint!

It will cost you just as much to paint as to sand and stain. Another vote to please not paint, especially not grey or black. The floor and front door color is lovely, I hope you are not changing. I would keep the beams the same. The dark floors and beams contrast nicely with the walls. What do you mean by as we are painting trim outside that black or grey? Most of the grey exteriors I see look like small prisons.
