What to do with broken branch with new growth

Need help regarding my Plumeria. I bought a 2 branch rooted cutting last spring and it did wonderful aside from a little stress (was dropping older leaves) it showed from the above average temperatures and frequent heavy rains. Anyway, spring seemed to take forever to get her this year so I ended up moving it from the dark corner in the basement and put it under a strong growlight to bring it out of dormancy. It got a late start but within a month I saw leaves begin to emerge from both branches. Once it was warm enough to move outside I accidentally damaged one of the growing tips during the move. It soon showed signs of rot so I cut the tip off about 3 inches below rhe rot. The other branch is doing just fine and Ive been waiting all summer to see what would happen with the branch I cut. Today I noticed a bud starting to emerge from rhe cut stem about 4 inches below the cut. My question is, do I do anything with the extra 4 inches. I'm happy about the new grown but the one branch will always be shorter and I'm not excited about that extra inches of stub above the emerging branch. Can I at some point trim that back further or is it best to just live with the stub?

conifers are not annuals.. nor perennials ... nothing is going to happen all that fast .... they put on growth in spring.. and then sit there until next spring ... no matter how many times you look at it... you probably arent going to see anything .... trees/conifers have 100 year life times ... relax ... they heal themselves .... one of two things will happen ... if the new growth is still softish .. you still have time for new buds to set for a new leader to develop ... but you probably wont see those for 3 to 4 months .... not weeks .. nor days ... in the alternative.. if no buds set .... one of the branches below the break will become the dominant leader .... achieving a lateral dominance ... you will notice this in two to 3 years .... keep it properly watered... and mulched.. and try to forget about it... it will take care of business itself.. this has happened on MANY of my mail order conifers... and the hardest thing i had to learn about conifers is the time frame of how long it will take to disappear .... or how long it took me to quit fixating on it .... lol good luck ken

I agree about taking the bottom branches to match, BUT as I understand, the tree has recently been transplanted, so I believe I would leave the branches for a year or so to let the newly planted tree become completely established in it new home. It has already suffered the shock of transplant and the loss of some of its branches, no need to further stress it by removing more branches.

I have a similar at a glance japanese maple from the arbor day foundation. Its out in the middle of the yard getting most of a full day of sun. Are yours getting a bit of shade? Mine is bushy and sags a bit in the summer. No with leaves on it the fella is shorter than it was a month ago! Where did you get yours? Some of the cultivars are bred to sag, weeping they'll call it. Wonder how we can work with that natural beauty.....

Gorgeous! Yes I can definitely see the lighter coloration. Thanks Evan. I will be repotting the kumquat into 5-1-1 soon so I hope to see even more growth after that.
