Expected life and ability to repair a 15 year old Thermador downdraft

I'm replacing an electric cook-top in my island with induction, and wondered if now is the best time to also replace the downdraft. I understand that downdrafts are marginal at best, but I can't do a hood.

I thinking about this because

  • I could probably save the current butcher block by modifying the cutout and space so it all works.
  • I avoid the hassle of replacing the downdraft later..and may need to replace the island top
  • It could increase the resale value of my home, we're planning to sell in the next 2-5 years.

The drawbacks are:

  • The current unit is adequate and a new one won't be a huge improvement. We use it sparingly.
  • The cost will be thousands of $ after installation, maybe new venting, etc.
  • It won't add materially to the value of the home

For me the issue turns on a couple of questions

  • What is the expected life of a downdraft? Could I expect another 5 years?
  • Could it be repaired if it breaks? Are parts likely to be available?

If he odds are good that I can get another 5 years, I'd be tempted to avoid doing it.

What do you think?
