Need help with living room furniture/design layout!!

I’ve tried so many online design companies and still am stuck! Having the hardest time deciding on a furniture layout for this room that opens to our family (tv) room!

What are you trying to create for the space? A sitting area, a play room, an office? That will help with furniture placement ideas...

The problem is obviously all those doorways. However, I would ignore them in terms of placing furniture and put a comfortable chair on each side perpendicular to the sofa. As long as the chair is small enough that you can easily get around it it's not going to matter if it partially obstructs the doorway. You want to have a U-shaped configuration so that as many people as possible can watch TV comfortably. You'll also need side table between the couch and the chairs in addition to a coffee table in order to make the room look furnished and so that people can place their coffee cups, dessert plates etc, somewhere. You might want to see if there's enough room on one side to place a small loveseat which can seat one adult and one child to increase seating. I would strongly consider a large area rug to lend some softness and color to this room which has so many openings with the bare windows and three large doorways. This will make the seating area look more finished and cozy rather than just some haphazardly placed furniture. More pillows would also be a good idea to soften the scheme and give it some cohesiveness, with the pillows picking up some of the colors of the rug. Colorful and interesting wall art would be a necessity to finish off this room, with more furniture (bookcases, desks, a secretary etc.) against the walls.

There would be enough space on that wall. My concerns were placing the sofa against the windows. Since the windows are very low (Down to about 1' to the ground), a 37" high sofa would block 2 feet of window height. Depending on how far into the room the sofa is, that would take 2' off of 2-4 windows. (The window location in the render is not 100% accurate, but if you look at the picture, it'll likely cover all 4 windows) In addition, those windows go to the backyard, which we would get afternoon & evening sun from. We were concerned about having a lot of glare from the sun if we put the TV opposite of the windows.

Oh to respond, the rug is 9x12. It hits the fireplace, feels big in the small area. But I see what you mean. I do agree with switching out some end tables.

Keep in mind that you are thinking of starting a family in the next year. You may want to consider holding off on a coffee table and having several end tables so you can place a play mat down in the center of the room and have a place to set bottles etc. and baby monitor next to you. Leave space for a baby swing and a play pen to be later exchanged for cube storage for toys. I may consider placing the TV on the wall flanking the chaise portion of your sofa with something under it that can be later used for toy storage. A TV over the fireplace is pretty high for toddlers to watch. Just thinking of the baby shark video and my niece interacting with it - dancing, running and hiding, celebrating when she is safe . . . and all the other learning programs that she loves watching and interacting with while watching. Maybe visit a few friends with babies and toddlers and find out what works for them before making any final decisions. I like the idea of a sofa and two chairs because it is more flexible.

A living room. Right now we are using it as a empty play room but would like a living room. This room is open to a family room where we have a tv over fireplace and sectional. I am replacing the sconces with more modern ones. Also, the furniture that is currently in this room would go down to the basement. I envision reading in the room, entertaining/sitting, and also having the kids play?

I see the layout looking something like this... two small sofas facing each other with a couple stools in front of the window. you could add a small table at one end of the room with a couple chairs, set up like a games table. something like the second pic but of course you don't have a fireplace, but the idea.

Do people enter the front of your house via this room? If so, you probably want a sofa facing the entrance; it is more welcoming. Lamps, coffee table and a pair of chairs would be a start. If you're keeping the rug, work with those colors.

Nope! If anything it’s through the family room that people enter. I’m not sure it’s wide enough for two couches facing each other and the it would block the flow. Room is 21 ft long by 13 ft wide.

If this is a sitting room, consider a sofa and two chairs. Add the two chairs to the single window walk.

i think 2, 75in wide sofas could work. if you did a 75in wide sofa which is 6.25feet, that would give you more than 6.5 feet of extra space for traffic flow, you typically need 3 feet of space for a walkway. it would be nice for conversation, IMO.
