Should I forget about 'curb' appeal?
Comments (8)I think you've answered your own question :-) You have no curb, your home can't be easily seen from the street so why do you need curb appeal? 'Curb appeal' is a popular buzz phrase coined by the real estate industry describing a means of making a house on the market "pop" compared to its neighbors and be noticed by potential buyers as they drive by. It has little - if anything - to do with landscaping or garden design except very tangentially. Even the popular HGTV show by that name focuses on the home itself -- any landscaping is just an after thought and typically not treated with any degree of professionalism. Just fill it up with color - who cares!! If you have no intention of putting your house on the market in the next year or so, then forget about curb appeal and make some decisions about what you want your garden/property do for you. If you want to class up the entry to the drive, do it. Can be as elaborate or as simple as you like. The point is, it's YOUR garden, your property, so the only ones you need to please are yourselves. As an aside, there are some good books published for your area that outline some really great plants that will tolerate the vagaries and extremes of your climate. Look for The Undaunted Gardener by Lauren Springer Ogden. And it's got lots of great photos for inspiration as well....See MoreShould I expand my front garden beds for curb appeal?
Comments (9)I do not see a planting bed at all in the picture if what is there is one it needs to be way bigger and should join another bed along the entry walk. It would also help to post some pics from further back . Barberries are nasty to work around BTW and IMO best planted in a spot to deter deer and stand alone. The spikes on them are deadly even for the dog. The house looks really small so the pics from further back will help. You do not want the plantings beds to take over the house . As for winter color there are some evergreens that grow well in Zone 3 and also some shrubs that produce berries for winter color. You should really have a plan before going crazy . IMO trees are a good for shade in summer and the fact they shed their leaves makes it great for the heat from the sun for the winter but they need to be planted in the proper place to do both....See MoreCurb appeal update: what would you do? HELP!
Comments (13)No, what will tie it all together needs to be the color. And then a bit more landscaping. Here, I fixed the rest of the shutters and picked a color that was taken from your bricks and a bit farther from the roof. The white trim is unifying too. I personally would find a lighter color for the front door so that it wasn't lost in its cave, but you may be attached to the wood look. Just some thoughts....See More50s Ranch-style Home Exterior Update and Curb Appeal Help
Comments (5)Thank you, both! I certainly understand and appreciate where you are coming from. Waiting has been our mindset for a long time. We have lived here for ten years mostly focusing on saving, doing infrastructure projects, and tackling smaller landscaping projects (it is on 3+ acres and much has been done in the back). It doesn't look like much now (spring has not really arrived where we are) but the beds will be full with plants soon as it warms and we always plant annuals, planters, pots, and baskets. The greenery always does wonders to make it look more welcoming! We have gone back and forth about waiting. Unfortunately, the paint has been slowly running off the house when it rains since we moved in, some places are down to bare aluminum, and the deck has not been done for three years and is in need of painting anyway. We feel like we need to address it now in order to maintain the house and keep from opening ourselves up to bigger issues down the line. Aside from the painting (which we plan to do ourselves) the other projects should not be impacted when we renovate (patio furniture, trellis, steps, etc.). A good chunk of the funds will go toward furniture and based on our budget estimates. The paint and associated supplies will represent a much smaller portion....See MoreDLM2000-GW
