I think Armscye is actually the fabric edge that you sew the sleeve onto instead of a hole, as I normally sew the sleeve on before I sew the side seam. It is of course much easier this way.

If I have to shorten a sleeve on an existing fully lined sports coat, then I have to remove the sleeve with the lining and interfacing, shorten the sleeve at the cap using a pattern that I make of the curve of the sleeve, which I slide down from sleeve cap, and then sew it back onto the armscye, which is now a hole. This is much more difficult than sewing a sleeve onto a new garment and is one of the reasons that I hate doing alterations. If you have it done, it can be quite expensive, however, and so I do it myself.

Good job ladies! (I had no idea. I don't remember a pattern ever calling it by name either. ) It was always a bodice "sleeve hole" to me. ☺
