Remodeling Design Dilemma Kitchens

Kitchen Remodel help for how to place island

We are tearing down the kitchen wall in the new house we bought to open it up to the great room and having a hard time figuring out how to get the function we want. I love a big island and we were initially thinking that we could just open up the kitchen wall and place a big island in front of the windows but we're getting feedback that it seems like it's awkwardly sitting out there floating. The other suggestion was to just do a peninsula off the wall but I don't love that you can only put a couple of seats there.

How do I get this big island feel that brings a true feeling of integrated kitchen and great room space? See attached pictures of the current kitchen, the island and L shape layouts.

We'll have dark charcoal shaker cabinets, concrete or grey countertops, some white backsplash, and maybe a brick backsplash element behind range hood.

Any ideas??

I need measurements to even beging to help. I agree that island really does not connect to the kitchen but without knowing much else hard to see what is possible .I see an issue for me it would be the DR so far from the kitchen .I know you want an island but not all kitchens can or should have an island IMO a nice galley kitchen functions well and would be my choice but I need a tp scale floor plan with all meaurements clearly marked and an understanding of why the need to open the kitchen at all. I am finding it confusing to know which wall you removed in the photo now that you have gutted the space maybe some pics of the space as it is now would be helpful

I had the same thought -- why is the dining table on the other side of the earth from the kitchen? is that how you plan to set things up?

I agree with the feedback you've gotten that the island is just creating a big barrier. I feel it would be annoying to have to scoot around it to get in and out.

How are you using the corner space inside the kitchen (bottom left in the plan)?

rrs626- Your choices are beautiful! I love your granite and backsplash. What a difference from what you first were considering. I love the new backsplash vs the cream that you were thinking about. I can't wait to see it up. As for me, we are moving slow. I have all our walls patched and sanded and the old backsplash is down. I am going to start painting in the next week. We are waiting on countertops for now due to some uncertainty with the economy. Once my husband is a little busier with work, we'll move forward. I'll post some pics of the new paint job because even that little change will help. Hopefully, we'll have the new countertops in the near future. Sorry, I didn't catch your posts earlier. You made some great choices!

How much perimeter counter top do you have — over by your cooktop and ovens. Could you choose something new for the peninsula and perimeter? If that's the only additional area, it couldn't be that much more expensive…. I see you have a nice backsplash — I guess you would just need to make sure it could be done without affecting that.

Nothing but drawers and more drawers CP! Just trying to decide if I want a few with 4 stacks as well. I went with all 3 stacks. I figured it kept the lines more regular but also I figured if I needed more space, I could always get the drawer itself divided with a sliding tray thingy. Of course YMMV. One thing I try to achieve when laying out a kitchen is to be able to remove the clean dishes from the dishwasher and put them away without taking a step. It is not always achievable, but the closer the layout comes to that the better it is, at least in the dishes part of the design. And her updated design will do exactly that! I have that in my kitchen too and love it. DW on one side of cleanup sink and drawers for silverware and dishes on the other side of sink. It's jut a question of turning around. Glasses are a different thing. They are stored above the prep sink nearer the fridge. Mark brings up a good point. Now with this design, figure out where every single thing will go in your kitchen. Label what will go in each drawer. Yes you may decide to change a few things once it's all done, but overall think of what goes where and where it will be most convenient.

Thank you for the comments! I need to clarify that a few of the lights are already up. I have modified the layout to indicate the following: filled in green circles are where the electrician already made holes for canned lights. I would like to leave those in place as much as possible since he's already done the work for them. Should I add two more lights where the blue circles are? Where would you place them? Would you add any more lights than that? We did not pay for under cabinet lighting. We have it at our current house and never use it so we didn't want to spend the money on it. I have requested they be set at 3000K like the rest of the house. Is that too low? I don't like the super bright look when the K gets too high. The kitchen is on an open floor plan with the living room.

I like the original kitchen with the eat in area. I think opening up that wall causes a lot of problems.

Doesn't island mean floating not attached? All you inspiration pics are peninsulas not islands.
