Someone please tell me I don’t have to dig up my rose ..
I have a beautiful climbing rose that’s about 3 years old. She was thriving this year. But today I really bent down and inspected and saw that some canes were getting black at the bottom. I cut those off and then went to inspect further and realized that the remaining 2 canes have black spots on them too (see image attached). I’m worried my rose is essentially a gonner. I’m very sad it had a LOT of new growth and was blooming beautifully. Would love ANY advice or insight.

Comments (16)Wow, we just got SPANKED with another microburst...I thought we were gonna catch a tornado that time, for sure! I had to shut down the 'puter and run and close all the windows. In that time I lost my post, I'll try again. Linda, I spoke to Century Oaks Peony Farm about Butterflies in Flight, and they maintain mine cannot be, since BIF are brand-new this year and mine have been here at leastfive years. My nieghbor behind us also has a HUGE bush of these, and I maintain they hav been around here for many years. However, yours 'could' be BIF, although I doubt they would be offered through Wal-Mart their first year. Cecily, here are a couple closer shots of the 'white' one. Sorry the pics are so yellow...it is so dark this morning that I had to use the light and I didn;t correct for color accuracy before uploading. Close enough, though. The outer petals (are they really sepals?) are a pale pink while the rest of the flower is white. Comments (12)Hi Seil, I agree with the above comments. One thing I didn't see mentioned is pH. Have you done a pH test? Roses prefer slightly acidic. 6.5 is ideal. Will still be happy in 6.3 to 6.8 range. You can buy a cheap pH Test Kit at any garden store. Some of the drug stores have them too. If your pH is too high or too low, it will lock up the nutrients so your roses can't get to them . . . even though you are feeding your roses. Water was mentioned as well. Rule of thumb is 2-3 gallons of water per week. Depending on the season and your climate, they may need more. Deep watering is best. Meaning don't water a little every day. (I made this mistake in the beginning). We want to encourage roots to go deep into the soil. Therefore, it's better to water twice or three times a week for a longer period. Also good to check the drainage. Roses don't like "wet feet". Easiest way to do this is to dig a hole (6" should do). Fill it with water either in the morning or evening. If the water has not drained within a few hours, you have a drainage issue. Can add 1/3 perlite or sand to help with this. It's a lot of info we've given you. Comments (6)Mulch the heck out of them if you must keep them in the ground and pray for a mild winter. Otherwise, bite the bullet, dig them up, and, if it's going to freeze, then take the time to bring them into a protected environment until the cold passes. It wouldn't help during a power outage unless you went to the extreme of delegating a generator for the cause, but the ThermoCube available at Home Depot or online is a wonderful gadget for preventing freeze in one's tuber storage area. A space heater plugged into one of those in an outlet in an enclosed area and you're almost guaranteed to prevent loss from freezing. I got lucky with stored tubers during our 6+ day power outage and icy cold a couple winters ago, but every clump I left in the ground last year (duplicates or didn't-cares) was rotted to pulp this spring. I would dig up anything you don't want to repurchase and experiment leaving those you don't care so much about in the ground with a heavy mulch of leaves or straw. Good luck. Comments (29)I have to laugh when I hear of anyone that says that back splashes get greasy, nasty, grout lines gross, and so on... ALL that I can restate time and time again is the OBVIOUS: the person responsible for cleaning the kitchen doesn't or does not know how to clean. Period. If someone fries a lot and does not clean then WHAT do you THINK any kitchen would look like? It's just utterly ridiculous. The majority of people on this web site probably are the upper echelon of fanatics on kitchen cleanliness and appreciate a beautiful kitchen. And we do know what it takes to maintain a clean kitchen. Some people just do not. And I'm with everyone else: if someone is trying to steer you into a direction that you don't want to go in, then don't go with them! I'd be thankful that they gave you a clear forewarning of your imminent unhappiness to come if you hire them to do a specific job they had no confidence in performing. Some wonderful building talent out there just don't come out and say, "I'm not good at...(whatever), so you would be better off hiring so and so."...See More

3 years agoOh my gosh you guys are giving me all the hope. Here is the picture of the stuff I did chop (the ones above I kept) they look way more black BUT above yes VERY healthy and lots of blooms and new latteral and side canes, healthy leaves not even black spot. So perhaps there is hope ??
