Weird corner in family room

I've been struggling with this corner for a while now. If we hadn't been in such a rush to get furniture I probably would have measured better and gotten slightly smaller cpuches or slightly larger end tables. Right now I plan to get risers for the end table to make it higher, but I feel like the space needs something else, a bookshelf, a lamp, another table, a chest, something. I'd be open to getting a different table but this one matches the sofa table and other end table in the room so I'd like to keep it.

Any suggestions would be appreciated. I know it needs to be cleaned and decluttered, that's on my list. Also, we have two small children so whatever I put here should be kid friendly.

Hard to get a sense of the room there is so much in there. But you do not seem to have any table or floor lamps. This kind of lighting is much cozier than a ceiling light when low lighting is called for. I'd leave any major changes for when the littles are not taking over, for now they are decorative enough!

So I don't get to have a nice house because I have children? I don't want to make major changes I was just asking for some helpful advice about the open corner that looks weird. Also, the room doesn't have that much in it, its a pretty large room and needs to be functional, I'm not a minimalist, just a normal mom who also has to live everyday in my space. I still want it to look nice.

brickeyee - Thanks for the reply. Unfortunately the layout changed because of the poorly finished materials (KM cabinets). The molding would have fit fine without the end panels. I guess this is something to take into consideration when planning the layout. Don't fill in every inch but leave breathing space just in case. I hope I get use to it! Or it will drive me crazy. Good suggestions and questions. Honestly didn't pay much attention to the position of the tv and artwork since we are replacing it with an entertainment center soon....I am thinking that will fill up the space to an extent...There is a backstory to the 2 drapes...The maroon ones were our older drapes and the beige curtains the ones we purchased recently...Problem is I didn't like how the beige drapes looked by themselves...so retained my old drapes as well...:)

If you feel you need an end table for putting down drinks, books, etc., get a round one and move it close enough between the sofas so it can be reached. (You can probably find one in a thrift shop or on Craigslist and paint it white or an accent color.) Other than that, a lovely floor lamp in the corner would light up that corner. Not every empty space in a room needs to be filled, so feel free to remove the little shelf-y piece, which doesn't add function or interest to the corner.

Matchy/matchy isn't a thing right now so you would probably be happier with a new end table and a lamp. Here's a chart to help you get it right this time. Notice the table should arrive at arm height on the seating or at mattress height on a bed.

Yes you can have a nice house with kids but IMO you have too much stuff in a tiny room so my suggestion is move out everything then just put back what you absolutely need all the tables , ottomans , kids toys all need to go . If the kids have to have some stuff in there it needs to be put away at night for adult space, That will need to be a cabinet under the TV that can hold toys and BTW the TV needs to much lower. The kids table goes in the kitchen or in her room.I see no open corner in that space and IMO the sofa table is just collecting stuff so take it away. I do this with my clients all the time once you only have what you need in that space it will look better function better and be easier to keep clean and tidy.

Looks to me like a comfy room used for a family with two small children. Don't I see a little girl on the chair? Cute.. I would get a floor lamp to put by the corner table and lower your TV. I have to ask...what is the stripped box thing in the corner? Can it be moved? Take your time finding a bigger taller end table...having a floor lamp there could be enough for now.

Are you talking about the corner between the two couches with the end table and the striped box? Why don't you take a picture of that corner from the other side of the room so we can see the surroundings more clearly.

Based on what I can see, you need a taller end table and a table lamp would be nice. Remove whatever the striped box is. I think any additional furniture like you describe (bookshelf, etc) would be way too much for that small corner.
