Taking long trip with baby, can you help me? :)
Comments (5)Having an extra car gives a lot more options. It may or may not be 'needed' but it can still give people a sense of relief if that is ever needed. If not relief exactly, it's sometimes nice to break the monotony of long rides/drives by switching vehicles too. 6 month olds usually require some adult attention. They'll need some talking to or singing to, and some familiarity to orient themselves. They might or might not get carsick (usually those kinds of problems show up later though if they occur). If they get pushed past their personal point of endurance though, they will cry and need more intensive soothing. Some of that can be avoided by having an assigned adult sort of monitor the baby's apparent stress level. Basics would be some way to isolate and travel with (if necessary) dirty diapers until the next stop. Teething, and basic infant pain relief supplies. Sunscreens for infants or extremely sensitive skin, and hats and/or baby sunglasses or sun shades. Also, for the adults take at least one special comfort indulgence. That can help extend the adult's endurance if that's needed. It is sometimes hard for 4 and 5 year old verbal developing children on long car trips and they will need to be verbal and probably to take play breaks (they should have activity-related toys like frisbees or jump ropes or balls; anything that will help them to get a little physical exercise --the adults might be able to benefit from their own exercise too if possible). It's more of a hassle than travelling as a single adult probably, and maybe even than travelling as a couple of adults sharing a relationship, but it's probably worth it. The trick to not losing one's mind is to recognize the symptoms of impending problems and to act proactively to take relaxation steps or to improve the problematic situation. (Allow everyone to be at the age and stage they are, and to have the personalities, thoughts and feelings they all have naturally (including yourself). Then, try to work with everyone as they are, and not how they 'should' be and things should be enjoyable.)...See MoreTaking another trip
Comments (17)I plan all my trips as I enjoy scouring over maps and looking for interesting things to see. We were in most of these places in 1998 when Bobby was 5. Actually there are a few rest days and some days we will only be out for half the day. Also some of the places we will be seeing such as Canyonlands and Arches can be quite warm so we won't be missing all of our Arizona heat. Actually our temps a lot of the time are cooler compared to folks back East with their high temps and high humidity. It was only 75 here yesterday. We have been getting quite a bit of rain so our desert is very green right now....See MoreTaking a short trip
Comments (9)Thanks guys for your replies. Getting away helps when my usual pursuits don't. Woolaroc is a historical museum, Indians, pioneers, lots of bronze sculptures. One thing I will always remember is a statue of a woman holding a baby and a rifle, a toddler hanging on to her skirts, her husband dead at her feet. Sounds horrible, but very touching. I think we have to be grateful for their bravery and their search for freedom. I am looking forward to visiting it again....See More"Tomorrow and tomorrow and tomorrow, creeps on this petty pace..."
Comments (25)Yep, I only water "new implants",and last time I was there I did test the soil with my moisture-reader of a couple of them, and the soil still registered as "moist" ,so I haven't yet started watering. In any case, this year there's only 15 new ones, since I could only start gardening after Christmas, due to the hip operation. What's more, I do have quite a lot of water stored up out there; it's just that, as a principle, I like to always replace the water that I use as much as possible. But these past 2 years have been so hard: last summer, since I was doing chemo, I had to break my rule and use water without replacing it,my water-catching rooflet fell down, and un-wisely, I put off filling up one of my 5 big water tanks-I didn't forsee my car having problems. So, things are far from "desperate", lol-it's just frustrating. For at least this up-coming week, I may have to avoid trying to go out there;the forecast is so bad! extreme heat, no favourable wind (for me, favourable is south-west ; makes it bearble temperature-wise and keeps the mosquitos, flies, etc away). Among my future projects is to build myself a sort of gazebo, so I'll have a place to sit in the shade and just look. Also adding trees, though it's tricky. The view is so beautiful, and I don't want to block it too much, but it is towards the south-west . So I am trying to guess spots in which I can put trees that won't block the view completely, yet will provide some protection from the afternoon sun. But I get so little morning sun, and I don't want to block that. I'm also trying to think of ways to shade the roads that I must use to get down to my garden. For the main one I'm going to try to plant tall -growing climbing roses that I can train over rebar bent to form arches, in the hopes to create a sort of rose tunnel. On another path, within the garden,I've decided to not replace the roses that I removed -they were doing so poorly!-and instead put in a redbud or two. I've got 2 wisterias planted that I'm hoping will help shade the entrance gate as well. Gotta build support structures for these things, though...so much to do! but for now it's best that I just sit tight, and try to be patient....See Moremaifleur03
