Taking a short trip

Monday I am going to Bartlesville, OK for a couple of nights and will be staying at Frank Lloyd Wright's only skyscraper. I don't know much of the history yet, but hope to take a tour of the building while I am there. I will also visit The Woolaroc Museum. The museum was once The Phillips family week end retreat. The hotel I believe was once the petroleum companies offices. I have been to the museum once and have always wanted to go back. The things I will do there are mostly indoor things but if I continue on to Ark those will be outside. Not sure I will do that this trip, depends on how hot it gets. It will be a nice easy trip, not a long drive. I called the hotel 3 times to be sure I got what I wanted, the last call I asked if I had a room with a view. The lady laughed and said, "honey, I gave you one of the best rooms we have and it has two walls of windows". Should be fun.

That's really interesting. I didn't realize he had done a skyscraper.

In September we're going to see 2 of the homes he designed in Pennsylvania - Fallingwater and Kentuck Knob. I'm really looking forward to finally spending a day and touring them.

I went to the Woolaroc Museum way too many years ago (1969-1970?) and really would like to go back. I bought the museum book and once in a while I come across it. It's one of those things I won't part with. Must have made some kind of impression on me, huh! One of these days......

Elsier, depends on where in Florida you are! It's a pretty big state. If you're in the miami area, fairchild tropical gardens is a great place to visit but they have little for sale. I've found that local nurseries, and the big box stores carry a lot of what we northerners (me) go crazy for, at very cheap prices compared to what we see at home. If you are anywhere near Homestead / Redlands / south west of miami there are a lot of wholesalers who are very gracious to retail buyers. I've bought orchid tree seedlings for $1 or calla or caladium bulbs for 25 cents each! the prices seem to vary with how much the grower likes you. The bauhinia orchid trees are spidermite magnets but make a very pretty outdoor pot specimen for a couple of years if you have a place to overwinter them.

In a day you can cover City Place, Clematis and Worth Ave in Palm Beach. They are all within minutes of each other. It's already getting real HOT. Wear comfortable shoes and cloths that do not show sweat marks. Keep travel baby wipes & travel deodorant in your purse for quick refreshers if you want to dine later in a nicer restaurant. Don't wear pants or you will die. A little further south is Antique Row which used to be great but is not so great now. Still if you had an extra day to kill you never know if you might get lucky looking through the junk. I would start at City Place and then walk to Clematis. From there you used to be able to take a water taxis across to Palm Beach. However, the off season is coming so I'm not sure about the boat. One of the "older" dogs I've had came to me sort of like Summer's Pokey. He was a huge English style Lab. The people had 3 of them, a older female (the mom) and 2 younger (1 male/1 female). They were losing their farm and moving to an apartment. Obviously, 3 large adult dogs couldn't all come along. They were keeping the old one, thinking she didn't have more than a year or two left and felt it was unfair to ask anyone to adopt her. I had my choice of the other two. They asked absolutely no questions and though I tried multiple times, I was never able to reach them to let them know how happy the dog and I were together.

That's sounds like an interesting trip and a wonderful place to stay.

I went to a FLW exhibit a year or so ago and found it fascinating.

We have one of his homes in our city, but I haven't seen it. I am looking forward to staying at the hotel.

I took a tour of Falling Water when I was in high school. Amazing! My current house is a split level design allegedly "stolen" from FLW.

Thanks guys for your replies. Getting away helps when my usual pursuits don't. Woolaroc is a historical museum, Indians, pioneers, lots of bronze sculptures. One thing I will always remember is a statue of a woman holding a baby and a rifle, a toddler hanging on to her skirts, her husband dead at her feet. Sounds horrible, but very touching. I think we have to be grateful for their bravery and their search for freedom. I am looking forward to visiting it again.
