Do dormant buds appear on --dormant wood-

With Isaiahs coming through the northeast, a pretty thick stem that was part of the primary -branching- framework of my LL tree snapped.

It's had a pretty good season with on this stem with 3 flowing stems and lotsa sun and leaves on this stem that has broken off.. Do you think I will get a dormant leaf bud next year, keeping this stem Alive ?

I have had similar incidents in older LL trees and in my experience, sometimes it will just remain a dead stick moving forward.

This spring, I had to cut one stem while dormant pretty far back. I had some borer damage and just took incremental cuts till I saw no hollow wood. A quick inspection of this stem while I was on this shrub today, no leafs, no life, just a stick of wood as well.

So whaddya say gang. Is this one stem that snapped leaving me 4 inches of a snub that remains, what TLC can I give it, aside from singing and swooning it, to make it give me some leaf buds for next year so this stem can still continue to grow for years to come.

Give it some hormone treatment and see what it does. If it works, have a venti late for breakfast. If it does not work, have a venti late for breakfast. If it really upsets you, have a venti late for breakfast instead. Hee, hee, hee. Ah. life is good. ;o)

You lost me at Hello. But are we saying literally, just dump some rooting gel on it ? Not that it would be on my radar to put rooting hormone on fresh cut where I just want leaves ? It's just a 4" stub right now coming off the -union-. I won't expect anything this year, but as long as I get a leaf bud to grow out of it next year, just so I know it's alive...I'll be one happy camper

Sorry Michael. I incorrectly perceived your intent. I thought you were egging your peach blossoms on. I also use Kocide 2000, and measure about 1 1/2 tablespoons per gallon with a small coffee scoop. Peach blossom buds usually precede leaves, but not by much. When the blossoms begin to open, there are usually small leaves beginning to appear as well. Once those tiny leaves are there, I stop spraying or the leaves will be damaged. Up to that point, I have no problem applying Kocide at what I consider to be a fairly strong rate, though one calculated by trying to translate the byzantine instructions of the insert. I have used Kocide for 5 years now, and so far the earthworms do not seem to notice. Because of all the stable manure I truck in, earthworms are about to take over the whole place. Only the ducks are much of a threat, and the little waterfowl watch for me to walk out with a spade, then fly or run over to look up at me until I begin to dig. This is j0nd03. I can't log in with my old username for some reason. Toro, your tree is looking might happy! Mine has actually flowered the last two years but did not bear fruit so I guess it is a male. I have four other blackgums planted on the property so hopefully at least one of them gives me some babies in the future!

Personally if it was in bad shape I wouldn't prune anything. If it was outside in the spring/summer maybe; but not indoors over winter. Shape pruning is a luxury I can't afford over winter indoors. Citrus is not as good of growing from dormant buds as many plants. I can hack away at my jasmines, cestrum nocturnum and they'll sprout back with a vengeance; but citrus not as much unless it's really growing at full tilt. 150w hps indoors at 30-40% humidity isn't the same as outdoors in the summer where humidity and temperatures are in >70 and humidity >60%. I had some plants in the garage under dual 250w Metal Halides, temps in the 50-60s, but very few things were particularly "happy", although everything got through. My $.02

It is not lacKing any light - as I said and Showed in my post. of course branches are getting longer - where else it this tree supposed to create growth? :) those buds did not just randomly show up on a trunk they are a result of pruning and appeared after someone has pruned it. They are second highest buds on a branch , first ones sprouted into branches. They are not dead Or dry, it may appear so on the picture because what you see is their sheaths still covering them. Those highest buds looked exactly the same in the beginning before growing and sprouting. If I look closesy I can see a peak of a green leaf underneath sheaths so I don’t believe they are dead. If you suggest they are axillary buds - they might be but that still means they are not dead, just dormant for an unknown period of time, so I wouldnt loose my hope just yet:)

Oh, I thought you were talking about a thick cutting that snapped from the tree that you were trying to propagate. Never mind but you can still have the venti late. ;o) Controlling where a leaf grows out of is something we humans are still not good at. Probably best to form a callus there and prevent issues from getting access to the inside of the plant. Then it becomes a waiting game.... to see if it will develop leaves when and where.

Ah, I see. I see where you were going with. Don't care about the cutting. I was doing Isaia's cleanup with the trash bin putting stuff in........ she spied the cuttings and I gave the cuttings to the dog walker.

Already put some glue on the top... I guess hope for the best, is the key word.

Do I need to go crazy like some of you guys do with the amendments, Seaweed spray the little nub, some crazy magical spray on it weekly. I'm all IN if there is a product Seriously. I really don't want to lose this particular cane.......kinda like a big hole in a bush per-se

I'll skip the Venti but I'll take a few neat double shot 2OZ or a cold pressed Single Origin ;-)
