To Marble or not to Marble...that is the question?
Comments (14)You can have your marble rehoned in place. I have about 145 sq ft in my kitchen. I had to be rehoned after installation because the original fabricator did a lousy honing job. it's a wet process, but the crew taped and tarped everything up. they cleaned up very, very well...you couldn't tell it was done. I have a lot of marble...I think the cost to rehone was about $2,500. So...I say, get it live in it and forget about it. The etching won't ever really bother you unless you dump a whole bottle of vinegar on the counter. If you feel you must do something to sell your house at a later date, then have the marble rehoned. Not a big deal. I have had my marble for six years, beginning when my four kids were 4-10 years old. We all LIVE in the kitchen. I have a few etch marks, but not anything anyone else would notice. I love my marble and would easily do it again. I have one chip where DH tossed his car keys onto the counter. Very small. I have deep ogee edges (the easiest to chip) and I don't have any issues on my edges or around my sink. Good luck with your process!...See MorePaint to compliment Fantasy Brown marble
Comments (11)Am also having this internal argument with myself on making right choice for cabinets/countertops. Going with a painted soft gray shaker style cabinets for perimeter and a darker wood stain for island. Originally wanted white quartz but we liked fantasy brown when we went to go pick out the countertops. Nervous this combo will be too gray and murky but don't want white cabinets...Painting walls white and white subway tile to brighten as well as going with a light wood floor. Thinking about keeping the fantasy brown for island but doing the white quartz on perimeter instead....love earthy tones and a natural stone so FB is beautiful but don't want to over do the gray...anyone have pics of the gray/FB combo all done?...See MoreMarble?? Comments (13)@karin_mt I wish I could find Danby around here (or USA soapstone), but small town Iowa living limits availability. I wonder if you could comment on the visibility of etching on the darker, more variegated marbles like those I pictured? Our stone yard and fabricator have talked to me about the properties of marble in general, and I feel ok with potential scratching and the work of sealing to prevent staining. I’m also not overly concerned about the etching I saw on the more traditional, white marbles. Especially since my plan would be to have it honed. However, I’m wondering how etching works on the darker parts of the marble?...See MoreHelp me choose between Fantasy Brown Marble and Astoria Granite!
Comments (9)I would ask for a sample of the stone. Test it with lemon, oil, ketchup / tomatoes, wine, etc. See what really stains it. You honestly should not need a crazy expensive sealer and I agree that I would not want something that provides a thick coating. A basic natural stone sealer should do the trick. You can do it yourself, takes about an hour, most of which is just drying time between applications. Wipe up any drips or spills as quickly as possible and your stone should be just fine....See MoreAglitter
